Dragon Capsule Splashdown and Oil Platforms

Post by RC20 » Sun Aug 02, 2020 12:06 am

I like space stuff, love what Space X has done (and beat Boeing to a pulp!)

That said the Gulf of Mexico seems a bizarre place to come down, oil platforms being one with an error, have to clear the air of Helicopters.

Of course undershoot and overshoot an issue but a pretty wide area.

Changes of a space craft hitting a oil platform? A zillion to one! (actually about a KaZillion to one!) Chances of emergency vehicle/aircraft, aerospace vehicle? Extremely good! I remember the very early American space missions: a freaking air craft carrier in the Pacific! (and the capsules were starting to sink upon landing; must have been a good fuzzy feeling for an already fatigued crew!)

Comrades, there's no way I would have volunteered for space flight!!! ...this is from a crazy 'summer beach' that drives a Ural! (Son, it don't get much crazier than that, but then again...Urals are chick magnets and puppy magnets!... Have I been drinking?... What do you ask?

There are no oil rigs off the Florida coast.

I don’t think Alabama has any either.

Not sure on Mississippi and Louisiana.

Good point. I think coastal waters are still only 3 miles (maybe 12, I don't know if international norms and state territory are the same now)

I did see they had problems with motor boats getting into the Capsule zone after splash down. Stupid people.

German news reported they were hitting the water. That must have been alternative facts

After sailing the Gulf I'd be more worried about coming down on rocks or a sand bar. Place doesn't have any water!

I will defer to the ones who have boated it.

Gulf of Alaska is a real deep sucker.
