New to me 2011 Patrol, still the same bad luck.....
Hello all,
So, if you know me, you know the troubles I had with the 2017 I bought new......there were many. So, I traded my 2017 for a 2011 Patrol.
It needed some TLC and I was willing to give it some. To start I cleaned the carbs and put new jets and needles and gaskets in them, put on new rubber flanges on both sides and added the one piece hose and got ride of the 3 piece one. Balanced the carbs, and have her purring like a kitten.
Today I attacked the fluids.....stand by, this is where bad luck hits...I was draining the oil and many chunks of metal came out, on big chunk stuck to the magnet....the words I expressed can NOT be repeated here. Needless to say I completed draining it and changing the filter, I put fresh in and ran it a bit. then changed it again. it was clear this time. The transmission was next.....you guessed it, it came out like spoiled milk, a good sign water had gotten into it.....I ran oil threw it till it was clear. Filled it up and moved to the rear. Nothing out of the ordinary there.... pictures of the big chunk that stuck to the magnet below...and one know what it is, and should I keep using it?, Plus should I contact the place i got it from, I mean there's no warranty on it.....am i stuck with another broke Ural??

Emoore,
Can you place an object for size reference?
There are others with far more knowledge so I hope they chime in
Hoping for the best

That sucks.
I found several long metal pieces during a fluid change years ago. Turned out to be the little clip that makes your neutral light work, one of the most ridiculous and primitive set-ups on Urals. The rivet (why is it riveted?) had come loose and the engine just chewed it away. I couldn't find it with a boroscope to confirm but at the same time my neutral light stopped working too. This is around 2010 (I have a 2007) and it never affected the bikes performance (HaHa, using that word) at all. Just chewed-it-up and spat it all out by the next oil change. Your piece looks similar but seems to have more dimension.
I couldn't find all the pictures of the pieces but lets just say there were about 7 or 8 of them this size:
No neutral light for almost 10 years but who really needs one on these beasts anyway. It wasn't worth opening-up and installing this obscure $5.00 replacement part either. How stupid of an idea is this?
That is until this past Summer when I needed a new clutch. Now neutral light works and it's kinda weird seeing it. I just ignore it.
I say run the bike as is unless you can get some satisfaction from the seller/dealer or whomever you bought it from.
But it would be hard to say they could know anything about it happening or about to happen.

And the gearbox milk isn't really a problem now that you've changed the oil. Water comes in down the speedometer cable just make sure to throw some RTV in the cap before you screw it down to make a watertight seal and you're good to go there.

Yep, bearing cage. There are rivets in the web that holds the balls in place. Pic courtesy of Van's documentation -

Re: New to me 2011 Patrol, still the same bad luck.....
Ernie that sucks. If the bearing cage is from the front or rear of the crank then bearings, seals, and gaskets should do the trick. If it is the rod bearings then it is crank time. Going by the problems posted here, it is usually not a rod bearing.
Any way it goes, losing the bearing cage allows too much slack in the bearing and will beat the engine to death if allowed to continue.
Wish I could help ya.

I may not be good, but I'm slow.

Looks like time to pull the engine. Pull one of the heads off and wiggle the connecting rod (look at Van's site). If you have any appreciable side-to side play then the rod and crank are toast. If the rod is good then you should be able to pull the back end off and inspect the rear main bearing.

Ernie, Contact Van on Face Book at Ural Riders and Lovers. He is the best to eyeball that debris. Are you getting any unusual noise out of the engine. If it were a rod or main bearing going boobs up you should be hearing something

Just FYI, I'd have wanted the sump off for a coating of looking at after finding that...

Ernie, Van has confirmed that is bearing cage. If you want to bring the bike by my place I can start tearing it down. may need Bob's help once I get to the bearing

While I am sorry for your issues, not sure why you would think getting an older one would be better? 2017 I would call bad luck, a 2011 is more like playing craps (much higher chance of issues)
Can you post the link to the 2017 troubles.
Clearly its a do not run condition as you will just do damage.
