Oil Change without Filter Change

Post by darkhorse » Sun Sep 29, 2019 5:19 pm

Anyone happen to know how much oil is appropriate when changing the oil on a 650 without replacing the filter?

I replaced my pan gasket. The oil only and gasket only had about 700 miles on it. I probably should have drained it in to a clean container or at least measured it but I did not. It looks like I overfilled it by putting in the standard amount.

Just put in 2 quarts regardless if you change the filter or not. Never had a problem

Back in the days of the 650 a lot of us would run an extra 1/2 qt in the summer for the extra cooling. This was often discussed on the old CMSI board.

Thank you all for the input. I don't have the deep sump The owners manual calls for 74 oz. which is what I put in not thinking about the filter. I suspect that 2 quarts would have been right on. I will see what I can find about overfillimg for cooling purposes to see what I can learn. Thanks again.

I doubt if you find anything about it. Unless you inquire over on Russian Iron or call Terry or Gene. I think I'm one of the few old timers that is left on this site.

Proceed carefully. Not for nothing do oil threads (here, there and everywhere) have the reputation that they do. The idea of overfilling the sump in order to provide additional cooling seems...perilous. This isn't to say that it won't work. Perhaps it will. The price of failure promises be high, though.

Good luck.

Crankshaft hitting the surface of the oil if it's too high can create high shearing forces. This is fairly well known about in the world of Moto Guzzi (which I used to own), but which have the advantage over the Ural of a solid one-piece crankshaft, the Ural does not! :o

I wouldn't.

I don't see how that would work, except maybe taking longer to reach temperture :?

Just my 2 cents but I'm with your service manager. "Claimed" crazy long change intervals for syn lube is a marketing thing. Syn lube doesn't break down from heat as fast as dino but it does get contaminated as fast as dino. Oil break down/contamination rate also varies with use. The interstate traveling salesman running at steady optimal speeds/rpm isn't going to wear out/contaminate his oil as fast as the inner city delivery guy dealing with stop-n-go city traffic or your mom just repeatedly constantly making short hops to the store. Your motor, your call.
