retro rear shock bolt question

Post by sorsillo » Sun Sep 01, 2019 10:55 am

Hi Folks!
I recently had a pro shop switch out my rear shocks on the retro.
This morning I discovered that the bottom bolts were pretty loose, left looser than right.
I did snug them down with socket and wrench, dont think I over tightened...
Does anyone know how tight the bottom bolts should be?
Is it possible to over tighten with just socket and wrench?
(the bottom of the retro shocks is u shaped to wrap around the swing arm)

thanks!
S

You might want to apply some blue threadlocker to the threads of the lower shock bolts, the top should have locknuts.
I would say that you probably won’t over tighten the bolts with hand wrenches, as long as you don’t go ape $**t on them. If you can’t find the torque value from Ural, use a standard torque value for the fastener size.
I will say that in 2003, the fastener quality is less than good, you may want to replace the bolts with better ones anyway, and you do run the risk of the old bolts snapping or stripping at this point.
Do you want to sell your old take off shocks?

hey jaybird!
just came back in from checking to make sure i didnt over tighten, just in case. was going to head over to harbor freight for a torque wrench.
I had a feeling that they should be tighter than they were.
Thanks for the tips and yes! locktite will be finding its way to them. working in 90 degree weather feeling like 102 kinda makes the work happen in short spurts.
I do still have the old shocks, they are the original 2003 ones, i believe the newer ones are slightly bigger as far as the top nut and bolt go.
if you are seriously interested in them, let me know.
Due to the way the retro is built, the shop had to remove everything down to and including the swingarm. so glad i did not attempt that at home!
The ones I found came off of a 2015 retro wreck in ohio. They have lots of ural parts for good prices!
I think the company is pinwall cycles.
their ebay store may have better prices

Yes, I had been watching those shocks at Pinwall, I didn’t buy them because I haven’t had much motorcycle money lately. I was wondering if someone on SS bought them, now I know 😁
Yup, I’m interested in the old pair, I’ll send you a PM.

hahaha!!! I had been watching them for months and finally bit the bullet!
Much stiffer than the old ones and bike feels much more solid when sitting on it.

stupid question time, based on the fact that I have never adjusted shocks and am left handed making everything backwards.... This is a picture of the bottom of my shock is this on the softest setting or the stiffest setting?

This is a great opportunity to take photos of the Retro shock, measure the thread size and pitch as well as the dimensions of the shock to see if they are the same as the other Ural shocks and if an Ikon can be made to fit.

Thanks.

I was wondering when you would show up over here

As the OP indicated, there are some differences between 2003 Retro shocks and the later shocks, I plan to compare them to my 2013 Retro shocks.
What you need now is someone with a 2017 or 2018 to measure theirs.
