WANTED: Some Kind of Wheel Hub

Post by Tomcatfixer » Fri Mar 22, 2019 6:50 pm

Knowing I have a penchant for restoring things, the generous (and practical, since he's moving) DneprTim gifted me with a rusty ol' 19" steel rim.

-
While I have painted and trued wheels, I've never built one up from scratch and I would like the experience.

I figure I'll make a good 19-incher with whatever kind of hub I can score cheap. I'll paint or powder-coat the hub and rim, install some new spokes and nipples that I'll buy, then, maybe, sell it. Or not. Or raffle it. Or donate it (depending upon spoke pricing) to a rally. I don't know WHAT I'll do with it, but I know I want to learn how to lace.

Before I buy a hub from a dealer, do any of you have a "loose" hub or an unsalvageable rim with a good hub inside?

After building some wheels with mixed random parts, I suspect that the rims that were made to work with IMZ "bottlecap" hubs are different than the rims that were made to work with later cast hubs, not sure about mixing in Dnepr/KMZ parts, and of course the spokes are all different between the three styles of wheels.
Something to consider.
Maybe one of the "Experts" will chime in and square things up, it should be an easy answer for the one eyed Ural king.

While I realized that the hubs of different sizes will require different spoke lengths, I hadn't considered any issues from a potential rim/hub mismatch. Perhaps DneprTim knows the type and vintage of the rig from which this rim was sourced. 🤔

Wait, how come you didn't tell me about this today? I saw that rim up against your shed.

Lemme know when you give up on lacing/truing and I'll help you out! I learned from the best.

This rim (if it is a Dnepr rim) can be laced with a Dnepr hub

or with a Ural "bottle cap" hub
Image

Both hubs will fit with the appropriate spokes.

Neither modern Ural drum brake hub nor hubs for rotor disc brakes will fit.Bulges and drill holes are oriented to the wrong side

Danke for this guidance, Claus! Now, I've just got to figure out it it's an old Ural/Dnepr or modern Ural rim. 🤔

Sorry Chad, I should have written that, too.
If the first drill hole on the right side of the tube valve points down it´s a Dnepr/old Ural rim. if the first drill hole points up its a modern rim.
This said with the rim on a table and looking across the rim onto the valve´s hole (I hope, I could express myself adequate)

Well, then, that appears to be what we're dealing with here. Thanks for the education!

I suspect there may also be a difference between the modern Ural steel wheels in regard to drum brake or a steel wheel for front disc brake.

Thanks for that information Claus.
So it would be; valve stem hole at 12 o'clock with the first closest spoke hole positioned to the right of the valve hole?

Apparently. ...and it doesn't matter which side of the rim you observe, in this case, because no matter how you lay it down, the spoke hole on the right always points down.

That´s right. And I have no clue about the hole orientation for disc rotor brakes.

I'm sorry, you must not have read my original post.

I don't want a wheel.

I want to BUILD a wheel... for the experience.

Preferably for as little expense as possible.

You could advertise your wheel on the 2019 C.R.A.P. thread, however.

fun fact, bottle cap spoke pattern matches a certain US manufacturers rims, late model hubs don’t. No idea which rim you have! Having built a few wheels all I can add is have fun. Once you get started, it’s almost zen like. Then you have to attempt truing what you just built. With old Urals closeish is goodenov.

Would that manufacturer's name sound anything like "Hardley Ableson"? 🤔
