Clutch issue

Post by moonshine » Fri Oct 12, 2018 1:01 am

Good evening.

I have an 08 Gear up with 24K on the clock. Its been OOS for he past 3 years after I had some final drive issues/no time to put it back together. Finnaly the time has come all is back together. New batt and a quick cleaning later she sprang to life as always. Pulled the clutch lever tapped ot into first and it jolted accross the driveway. Clutch lever has no effect. It pulles with proper tension, moves the lever outside the tranny and has normal feel/tension whrn pulled. Can the cluch be seased together? Any recommendations on how/what to check? Thanks Ms!

That happens with BMW Airheads too. One of the fixes is to hold the clutch lever in and ride it and it often breaks loose in short order. I don't have enough experience with Urals to know more.

That has happened to me with an old Honda that had not been started in years. Jump-started in gear but with the key/ignition off. Started in 5th gear and made my way down to 2nd. Rocking back and forth, releasing the clutch hand grip. It worked but again, that was on a Honda.
You might have to open her up to separate if something simple like that doesn't work for you.

Sometimes this happens after it sits a while. driving it and exercising the lever while riding around can usually break it apart.

Well 2 years ago we pulled a resting/rusting Ural out of a porch and same story. I made it the hard way and the following owner did regret it. She had to change the clutch, because the first owner had badtreated the clutch, (not only the rig, but his own skull and shoulder too. 3,5kg Titanium implants)
The clutch dust had settled in the plate grooves and rusted so bad that the floating plates did not move any more. So if after a dozen tries the clutch doesn't start to behave decently, then better pull of the gear box and clean out the clutch internals, before you bend the plates and cause more damage. The job is easy and straight forward as long you do not have to pull off the fly wheel.

Remember these girls want to be used in order to work well. Resting means rusting and accumulation of bad flaws. Ride her at least once a week until the engine gets to good temperature (30+km) and she will be happy for a long time.
