how big a deal is using Moly grease on splines. can a moly blend or wheel bearing grease be substituted? Moly is very expensive! :? :foilhead:

60% MOLY paste is supposed to be the best assembly paste to get and should be way better then 2-5% moly grease, which already did great jobs on the farm back home long ago.
The Chesterton copper 710 and zink 785 paste I use are still not persuading me that much on FD, S/C splines, though already better then marine grease.
If available get the moly paste and you have enough for years of happy trailing. (or split into small flasks and sell)

Any grease will work but the beauty of moly paste it it stays put longer so you don't have to re-grease as often but any grease is better than none, Just depends how often you wanna mess with it.

The driveshaft splines develop considerable heat when moving back and forth. Wheel bearing grease or other lighter greases will heat up and be thrown off in use, leaving the splines effectively dry, unless you reapply frequently. Moly has the advantage of chemically bonding with the metal (not ad copy, look up molybdenum disulfide’s properties). Even though the splines may look dry after the moly has been on there, the moly is still there working. The moly is mixed with a heavy grease vehicle and it is the grease component that has melted away.

The drive splines suffer from torsional fretting when they mesh with the clutch plate teeth. They, too, need to be moly greased to slip the clutch teeth and prevent premature wear.

Substitutes for Moly 60 are Krytox or the BMW favorite. Kluber Microlube 261, or Optimol TA. Honda Moly 60 is by far the cheapest.

Pro Honda Moly Paste M77, around $20 or so and readily available. For the Ural, I only use this on the drive shaft splines and wheel hub splines. I clean the splines of the original grease and apply M77 paste thoroughly with a toothbrush. It's recommended to wear protective disposable gloves as the M77 paste is hard to get off skin and clothes.

This thread would be good in the 'Oil Threads' section.

Just FWIW...
There is also a product called "Never Seize" or some weird spelling to make it sound the same. It is full of moly and sticks like glue. It comes in a 1/2 pt. can, like a paint can. I don't remember how much it costs, I have had my can of it for over 25 years. It also stops corrosion and "sticking" between dis-similar metals. I used it in my Porsche shop for years and years.

YMMV

I use that anti seize on any bolts that I, well, don't want to seized. I never thought of using this as lubricant.

Mikey, there will come a day for Uralistas where the splines will need service, probably best sooner than later. i just ordered this stuff on eBay to try out, mostly curious. all the google searches seemed to say this is top quality paste, we will see its NOS and in a sealed can with a key ,but the date is 1966. The military moly may be a great deal, or maybe not. It all depends on the percent moly in the grease, which isn’t specified on the can. Basically - the more moly, the better.
