does size really matter?

does size really matter?

Post by hotflash44 » Fri May 12, 2017 7:18 pm

Hi, guys i was looking at the alternate oil filter list looking for a good oil filter cheaper than the Ural brand. So i took my old filter to the auto store and compared with some others, fram, ac delco, mobile 1 etc. and found several that the screw on part was the same size as the Ural, but the filter was 2 inches longer. im aware the in some circumstances 2 inches is a good thing, but how about Urals, will they like the longer size?

MANN filter W 75/3 is the stock filter. I bought a case of them off the MANN website for $9.50 a piece. Right now I have a WIX brand filter # 57207 on because I had to do my thousand kilometer service and the case of filters hadn't arrived yet. Image

yeah, i ended up with the Mann 75/3 , but was wondering if the larger filters would work, the Mann and Ural filters are only 2 inches long and some other brands are 3 or 4 inches long.

Thanks, DrZ got ya by a few years and as far as size i don't remember. But getting back to oil filters, considering the oil capacity of the Ural, maybe the smallish filters like the IMZ std, or the knock offs are that size for a reason. Small capacity crank case small filter/large capacity large filter.

You're overthinking this.

Any of the filters on that list that circulates here, will be completely fine.

I could go on and on, in boring detail. But I will put myself to sleep.

I use the elcheapo microgaurd, which is a solid filter. I replace it with every oil change.

i think your right as long as the filter fits it should be good to go. cant remember ever having a filter of any brand fail. and who knows how good they all filter?

Will a longer filter get in the way of the front wheel travel at any time. It would suck to be riding down the road and hit a bump and knock a hole in the oil filter or knock it off. I'm sure Ural used that size for a reason. I guess if you want more oil filtration you could always do a remote dual oil filter mount.

But then you would have to finder a better oil pump to push the oil through the filters.

I would get the smallest volume oil filter I could find, this would allow the oil pump to fill the filter quickly and get full oil pressure faster.

That's what i was thinking, if you use a huge capacity filter, most of your oil would be in the filter at any one time. and with Urals 2.1l capacity that cant be good. i did notice filters available that would fit, but they were twice the size of the mann75/3 or the Ural filter. I just wanted to bat this issue around for other opinions as it could be a problem! p.s. I use the Mann 75/3 myself good price, and considered a quality German made filter.

I like those , a extra quart is great, bigger pan requires a longer oil pick up also as i understand. Im always thinking about how to reduce engine temps especially here in Nevada. The older i get the more the heat seems to bother me. Not to many parts of this wonderful country have perfect riding conditions, but North Carolina must be close.

I use same dipstick As far as temp we had the great prolonged debate about whether or not more oil runs cooler Some thought would take longer to warm up. But at least 3 quarts won't get dirty as fast as two
