Don't hit me, but what bearings can be removed and greased on the newer Urals?

Upper and lower steering head bearings and all eight wheel bearings.

'Course, I'm doing a frame-up restoration on my '99, so replacing bearings is just par for the course.

TCF, so the wheel bearing on the wheel can be greased. Are they like car bearings that have a grease seal and easy to remove and grease by hand? Do the new Urals have wheel bearings that can be greased?

Forget the year (check Terry Crawford's site for year-by-year changes), maybe 2007, but since then all Urals have sealed wheel bearings. No maintenance but check from time to time for reassurance. Before that they had the roller bearings Chad's showing. Greasing was an every 10,000km job, shown on BillyG's http://www.myural.com site.

Grease seal was inside the bearing nut on the outside of the wheel. The new sealed bearings don't have that seal, though they have the same nut.

If you order a new wheel hub to replace an older one it will come with the new sealed bearings installed.

Wonder if a navy buddy would send me some mil spec 24508 ball and roller bearing grease.

Used that stuff on steam turbines and it is amazing!

On an unrelated note, if you have a Harley Davidson, don't use axle grease on your axles (and always consult the Field Service Manual first, because failure to do so may result in injury or death). Apparently, you need "Anti Seize Lubricant" instead of axle grease. If you don't, you might wind up having to pound your axle out of the swing arm and hub with a hammer and punch, destroying the axle and wheel bearings in the process.

Please don't ask me how I know this.
