2018 Gear UP Final Drive Drain Plug Leak

Post by dansandlin » Mon Aug 17, 2020 6:53 pm

Ok, I can see that I am not the first nor will be the last for a Final Drive Leak. I have a 2018 Gear UP. The Final Drive Drain Plug is leaking. It had the combo rubber made into the crush washer. I found one at the local auto parts store and NOPE. Still leaked. I purchased a copper one and used an O ring and NOPE. I read a lot of old posts here but they were for prior to 2016 and I didn't know if they changed. The Case has no other leak as I know t hey can leak and the drain plug is the lowest point of gravity. I have zero problems buying a new drain plug. What ever works. It only has 900 miles on it!!!!

make sure the other bolts are tight, mine leaked at 300 miles, it was not the drain plug. dealer said housing bolts where loose, loctite and re torque, so far so good.

99% of the time its coming out of the breather vent, and being misidentified as a leak elsewhere. Even slightly overfilling, hot weather, and high speeds, are all things that will exacerbate the issue.

Also, the front input seal, difficult to see the trail unless looking for it, and yes ends up dripping from drain plug.

Even after driving up to 60 mph (and no faster) some oil gets out from the breather.

Also, if/when flying the chair or tilting the bike to its left by lifting the sidecar up.

I spray and wipe after almost each ride to avoid any drops on the porous paving stone driveway.

Yes I'm frequently cleaning it off. Well fairly frequently. Don't get any drips tho. That I know of. But so long as it doesn't go lower than min on the dipstick, keep topping it up may be a mistake.

Clean it off with carb or brake cleaner. Then ride it and when you get the leak, take a straw and fill it with flour or corn starch and blow it over the FD case. Blow it in the areas mentioned by others. You might just find the source of your leak if it is not the drain plug.

If it is the drain plug, check to make sure that the threaded hole in the FD case for the plug is not cracked. If it is not cracked and it still leaks, get yourself a tube of Loctite 567 thread sealant. Put that on the threads and it will not leak. I use it on anything like this, included threaded fuel petcocks. It sets up but does not get hard. Gets more like gum. I think you could put the plug in finger tight and it would never fall out. And it cleans off with acetone so not an issue to clean the threads and apply new sealant after a FD oil change. But I think you could put the plug in with the old sealant and it would still work.

Rob has it all down.

Vast majority the vent as the listed fill is a bit high, it gets pretty hot (feel it after driving 10 miles!) fluid expands and vents.

It will drop down to a normal level or there is a mod to extend the vent longer and up that stops it as well.

The breather vent venting is the primary "issue" with the FD as it stands now, and the popular breather hose is being evaluated by IMWA. The loner I had when they were upgrading my M70 had one.

I've been running one for over 2 years now on my M70. It has entirely eliminated the issue, and has no undesirable aspects.

Gerbox vent does the same on my '07. Then oil goes down to the drain plug.

Try these sealing washers: https://www.mcmaster.com/93786A225/ The seal very well. The torque listd is 16.2 ft lbs. With these sealing washers it feels odd to torque them, but I did and used my inch pounds wrench, set at 194 inch pounds. My final drive doesn't leak... from there.

I did have a bad leak from the front seal, bad, but replaced the seal and used black RTV on the splines the yoke mates to, and that stopped that leak. The drain plug would leak when using a copper crush washer, since the ones I could find around here are slightly too large, 14mm, because of the way the seat on the plug is machined. The McMaster washers stopped that leak. They are 13.7mm. I do have some fluid weeping from the hole at the bottom, so I have a seal inside that needs replaced, but it is slight and it can wait. For now though, I no longer have drips.

Probably not a drain plug leak. Probably a 'puking' out the vent leak. Normal, keep checking the oil level with the dip stick (remove FD dip stick, clean, screw back in, screw out, check level). It's pretty normal. I drain and refill every 5000 km(along with engine and gear box). Might 'puke' a little.

I was told the same thing, but mine was leaking from the front seal, and was leaking from the drain plug. My vent has always been clean and has not spewed from the vent.

Thanks for all your replies. My Ukrainian mechanic has told me what he thinks I should do but he hasn’t seen one of these since the 90s! I like the powder idea to rule out overflow. However when I put a new washer on and out just a little oil in and don’t even start the engine it leaks. I think I can rule out the over low vent. I was told by many this is not your normal buy and ride motorcycle. It’s still worth it.

If the dowty/sealing washer isn't compromised, and its actually leaking at the drain plug, I can only suspect that the case was damaged from over torquing, or some flaw, but doubt the latter.

If not the drain plug or breather vent, then I would suspect one of the seals, or a loose fastener.

One should also be sure they're not over filling it by exceeding 115ml by measurement, and checking with the dip stick screwed all the way in, NOT resting on top like the engine dipstick.
