Cracked rims claim

Post by Toyman57 » Fri Apr 03, 2020 11:57 am

I've read that some folks have been successful in getting a new replacement rim at no cost to them. I contacted Ural warranty dept. and had to leave a message that my 2012 had two rims with cracks in them. They returned my call days later and and asked who my closest dealer was. I then got a call from this dealer and they told me there was a statue of limitations on this recall and they would not honor it.

I'd like to know if this is true and if not how are you getting a free replacement rim?

I can't help but feel my dealer just doesn't want to handle this matter for me since I did not purchase it from them even though it was originally sold by them.

Recall depends on whether a voluntary recall or one mandated by NHSTA recall.

I'd personally call Ural directly and explain your case.. remember you catch more flies with honey than vinegar.

Sad to say, but there probably is a statute of limitations. Heck, that was eight years ago. With that said, sine HQ didn’t say the replacement hadn’t expired when they called you, as Epix said, call HQ again.

Search "cracked rims". I believe it starts with the newest to oldest, at least on my laptop & iPhone.

There have been a few pretty recent issues resolved and most of the time the rims were ones on newer rigs. Go figure why the factory would still be throwing these on? Hopefully some of the guys affected will pop into this conversation and let you know what they did and who helped them. Jason at Ural HQ comes to mind.
Either way you'll have to be proactive. Don't ride the rig at all and please note, take a couple pictures of the build date on those rims, let us know. Yep, 2012 but folks have been finding them on newer rigs too.

And while no dealer should be left holding-the-bag and doing work for free related to a defect... whomever that dealer was with that kind of attitude of helpfulness I wouldn't be wanting to take my rig to them ever in the future either. I mean come-on, thats ridiculous!

I can't prove it, but in my case I'd say the spoke nipples were way to tight :?

General experience with aluminum rims is if nipples are overtightened they will pull thru the rim. My suspicion is the alloy in these rims was taken beyond its yield point in the forming process. Might have been on the ragged edge which would explain not all rims cracking.

Tempering aluminum is a complicated process. With so much material coming out of China, it could have been a bad batch of extrusions with both good and bad material.

A couple of weeks ago I took my 2015 GU in to Heindl for some routine maintenance and a new rear tire. They found all 4 rims cracked (even the spare that never touched the ground). All four were replaced under warranty. Can’t say enough good things about Jon and Dave Heindl. If you are looking for a Ural or need service, they are worth the drive.
