Donut post install question....

Post by snowymonkey » Wed Oct 09, 2019 8:42 pm

So after the DGR I noticed my donut was looking rough and I ordered a replacement. Got a chance to put it in today (and yes I had to do the full swing arm drop thing). Install went smoothly...... tedious, but smooth (those swing arm metal tab bolt retainers are a PITA).

Once I got everything back together I left it on the center stand and put it in first gear to let things settle in. While in first at idle I have a bit of a clunk clunk clunk. It can be barely heard underneath the engine noise in my video. As soon as I give it throttle it goes away. I also don’t hear or feel anything when actually riding the bike. I don’t recall ever running the bike in gear while on the stand. Is the noise normal? Do they all do that when up on the center stand? Can someone, or several someones, go out and test theirs in gear on the center stand and see if it does it too.

I’m fairly certain I got everything back together in the same alignment that it came off. I’ve read about phasing the drive shaft... but I thought that was mostly concerning the 2wd drive shaft. Take a look at my pics and see if the relationship of the front and rear of the main driveshaft looks right. I’ll pull the FD and adjust if needed.

Kinda hard to tell from your pictures, but looking at the 4th & 5th picture you appear to be 90 degrees out. Picture #4, the U-Joint attached to the drive shaft (appears to be vertical) should be aligned with the donut yoke (which appears to be horizontal)

can't tell by your photos, but phasing the donut is the same as u joints. A little silicon spray lube may help if the noise persists

That’s what I thought. My pics are just hard to interpret. I appear to be phased correctly.

What happens with the noise if you lightly apply the rear brake while the rear wheel is turning?

As I'm sure you're aware, operating the drivetrain while the bike is raised on the center stand places the driveshaft at more of an angle than it would normally experience. This increased angle, coupled with your out-of-phase cardan joints, is likely the source of your mystery sound.

Take a look at this video, might show things better. If I’m out of phase I don’t see it, or it’s barely off.

Much better view. I'd say that's about as close to in-phase as you can get with a coarse-splined driveshaft. With the older fine-splined 'shafts, you could adjust 'em almost perfectly.

Good good.

Also as requested I did the light brake on the stand when I got to work this morning. Didn’t seem to do anything other than make the motor want to stall.

Also....... after my drive in the noise is much less noticeable. Almost gone entirely. Think maybe it was just the new donut settling in?

Maybe consider the noise the new "normal". If it changes in a negative way like gets louder, then investigate.
