Noise from the front - please help

Post by chumster » Sun Sep 29, 2019 4:16 pm

Front shocks? Gets louder while riding. I didn't think loud shocks save lives, so would like to get rid of the squeak.

2011 T with 4500km, so shocks are not serviceable, right?

Thank you!

Make sure all your bolts are tight. I experienced a squeak and tuned out a bolt was lose.

The video is dark, so it's REALLY hard to see what you are doing to make those noises.

Are you compressing the forks. Twisting the handlebars? Twisting AND compressing? etc.

edit
could be a dry bushing
sure sounds like something is dry...

Thank you for the suggestions.

Will check the bolts.

Sorry for the dark video.
I was pressing down on the front fender. No twisting of the handlebars.

Doubt that anyone can accurately diagnose from here. All will be good guesses.

If it were mine, I'd take the front suspension apart because if one part needs lube, the rest probably does as well. You might have severely rusted parts, only one is acting up and they all might need replacement or attention. If you don't want to do that. Get someone to get close on their hands and knees and listen to the various components and pivot points as you compress the front end. That should help pinpoint the bad actor. And if you do address only the current symptom, let it tell you if you need to go deeper into the other parts. Pay now, pay later.

I suppose you could have a bone dry shock, but that seems like a long shot.

Bottom line is let your ears or someone else's ears tell you WHERE it is. Then dig into that area to find out WHAT it is.

New thought...
I just had an extra synapse fire. That creak sounds like it might be a dry rubber bushing. Could be the top shock eye. Bushing might be seized to bolt. Anyway, shoot some WD40 on the top shock mounts and the pivot for the front swingarm and see if it goes away. Shoot one spot at a time and test. When you find it, take it apart to see what is really going on.

Thank you.
Just to make sure, the bushings in question are # 24 and 25? #17 as well?

Not sure what your noise is, but I'm gonna use that as my new ringtone! <G>

(Sounds more like a dry bushing on the leading link's pivot arm?)

The lower shock bolts can wear their way through the rubber bushing and ride on the swingarm itself. Look closely at them and see if it is worn out or just needs some lube. The Delrin bushings for the brake stayarm can also use some silicone grease. :)

Thank you, all.
I ordered a few bushings. Hopefully will get them soon and will have time this weekend to dig in.

Maybe time to spray some silicone lube on mine ... I do get a couple weird squeeks backing up on a hard turn out of the garage when it's first rolling when cold ... settles right down though.

Yep, silicone spray will help...mine are dry but not rotted so I quietened them down that way.
