Battery light on when ignition off

Post by STLJohn » Sun Aug 11, 2019 3:15 pm

Battery light comes on when ignition switch off. Don't make no sense to me. I just put in a new battery. 1997 Tourist

Can it be in "Parking" position?
Any lights at all in that position?

2 questions
1. Do you have battery kill switch under the seat?
2. With ignition off. Red alternator light on, can you still start the bike with kicker or electric starter?

The alternator is always connected to +12V. But the alt itself does not out +12v to the indicator light until current is created in the output coils. The alt is actually the ground connection that lights the light when the ignition is closed, providing +12v and the engine is not running. So, since the alt still provides the ground connection for the light and the ign switch is OFF, something else is providing the +12v.

I would pull fuses one at a time to see if the light goes out. If it does, then you know the circuit that is feeding the light. If it doesn't go out, then it would appear that you have an errant short somewhere that bypasses all the fuses. If fuse #2 kills the light, then either the ignition switch has an issue or the wiring to it does. If the ignition switch is feeding +12V with it in either the off or Park position, it should also be feeding the lights and horn because they are on the same circuit at the indicator light. With Fuse #2 in place, see if the horn blows or the lights are on. If the short is weak, the lights may be dim and the horn may not blow. Get close to the horn and push the button. May only be enough current flowing to make it click. I would think that pushing the horn button would make the indicator light go dim if it is a weak short.

Another test is go across the lit light with a DMM set to DC volts and check the polarity. The -12v should be coming from the alt leg. If it is +12v then your feed is coming from the alt/rect circuit.

If you just installed a new battery and the problem came up after that I would go back and check all the battery connections and wiring in the area to see if you have pinched one or made a wrong connection somewhere. Make sure you connected the battery correctly and the grounds are place. It almost sounds like the battery connections are reversed. :?
