Center Stand Spring

Post by darkhorse » Sat Jul 27, 2019 4:41 pm

I have done quite a lot of work to my rig which involved removing the engine and gearbox from the frame. I have it back together and am having a problem getting the spring that goes from the engine/gearcase mount to the center stand back on. I am assuming it is easiest to do this with the center stand down. I feel a little dopey but if anyone has any pearls of wisdom on this seemingly simple task I would be most appreciative.

I usually use the tool for installing the brake return springs on a car/light truck, it’s a combination tool. I’m on my phone now so no photos, maybe later when I get back to my computer.

you can slip pennies or nickels in between each spring coil to get it to the length that you need, hook the spring back in place and remove coins. At least that's the way that I did it on my sportster so I assume it would work for you.

Try it with the stand up. When the stand is down the spring is stretched more compared to when the stand is up.

These are great tips. Thank you all very much. I won't have an opportunity to work on this again until next weekend. I will let you know how I make out. Thanks again.
