bad sound...

Post by glacoste » Tue Jul 16, 2019 12:11 pm

Was out for a practice ride this morning and engine started to make a clunking sound.
Adjusted the valves and checked the push rods. Rods spin with no wobble.
Started back up and it makes the same noise.

It's not that then. Definitely not normal. Do not ride anymore until figured out what it is.

Hard to tell from the video, definitely doesn't sound good.
Does it have an exhaust leak at the head, or puffing compression, or is it definitely a mechanical knock?

Yes I wondered if it was a blowing gas noise.

Drop the oil and see if there is anything stuck to the magnet or flakes in the oil. If there are fine metal flakes you might have failed a rod or crank bearing. Another possibility is a nut or something caught in the combustion chamber and bouncing around.

I was having poor throttle response a few days ago. Looked at a video of drilling the slides with a 7/64" bit. I went ahead and tried that yesterday and was surprised how well the throttle responded. Drove around most of the day with no problems.
I did check the spark plugs today and they where all black with soot.

Fortunately it was still under warranty.

My condolences :(

Just as important, what does the oil look like?

Are you sure that's the engine drain plug, cause it looks alot like the swarf from the tranny. That much metal from the engine on a broken in motor seems excessive to me but could be normal. I run Royal Purple synth and have little to no swarf from the engine but mine also has almost 90K klicks behind it.

Engine oil looks good. I did a filter and oil change just last month. The plug did come from the oil drain pan. This is what it looked like from the last time I changed the oil.
Going to pick up a magnet to insert through the spark plug hole to see if something might have gotten lodged in there.

How many kilometers on the engine? I'm concerned that if that much steel is floating around in there that something is about to fail( or has). It sounds cyclical so it has something to do with the crank or camshaft, perhaps a soft lifter that has worn or a tooth missing from the gears, etc. You may have no choice but to pull the motor and tear it apart to find the culprit.
