Gearbox rebuild question

Post by S 854 » Tue Jul 09, 2019 7:57 pm

I recently lost 3rd gear... so I tore into the gearbox and found the 3-4 shift fork and collar were worn... no biggie...

However, as I was dismantling the thing I came to the only bolt inside the gearbox that needed removing... it’s this one...

I got it from Turtals most excellent video:

Right around the 1:45 minute mark he unscrewed the bolt with only a socket and extension... which is what I was able to do after pounding down the tab holding the bolt in place... no ratchet needed... it was only “finger tight”...

So, to reassemble, do I just get that bolt snug with my extension and socket then hold it in place with the tab? Or is that bolt supposed to be relatively tight (employ a ratchet with the socket) THEN engage the tab?

I think the easiest and best solution is to buy a Sergei rebuilt 2014 gearbox.

Since it had a lock tab, and your shifting had been normal in the past, I’d reassemble as you found it.

I took a look in my 750cc Repair Manual for all models. On page 61, referencing figure 53 here is the comment on that area/bolt.

"- Set the reverse gear shift fork and insert its lugs into coupling slots of the coupling gear, bolt it and lock with the tab washer."

If I was working on the gear box I would tighten the bolt to industry specs and then employ the tab washer.

Hope this is helpful.

Best,

Thanks for the replies... once my parts get here I’ll post whatever it was I ended up doing to either:

A: Help the next guy

Or

B: Make myself look foolish for doing it “wrong” ... which will also help the next guy...

Just watching it again - he had obviously flattened the locking tab earlier - albeit it's still with the bolt.

Yes... his video is pretty much a demonstration of how things come apart and go back together... ALL the fasteners had been pre-loosened... my quandary is whether or not to tighten the bolt in question...

After visiting BillyG’s MyUral site... I’m leaning heavily towards the tighten-the-bolt side...(I don’t know why I didn’t go to BillyG’s site first... )

Presumably it's not a pivot point, so yes.
