An easy way to fix a stripped sump drain plug threads

I stripped my sump drain plug thread.

Here are some thoughts and solutions.

Replacement

Dealer, with gasket about $100
Terry Crawford does not have any of the $30 sumps left.
Russian Garage has a 650cc sump for $19.00 (I think it is the same)
M14 X 1.5 Helicoil


Or

A longer Sump drain bolt at $18.99

There are 20mm of threads on the sump. Most drain plugs use about 10mm

Don't bother with a longer bolt. Save the money to give the welder. The threads are standard "bolt/machine threads" NOT "tapered pipe threads". So a deeper/longer bolt won't do squat. It's the washer/gasket that does the sealing not the threads. Other than replacing the pan your permanent fix options are drill out the old stripped threads and retap the hole for the next size bolt plug. Or weld a chunk of thick(0.25"?) plate over the outside of the stripped hole and drill/tap for the stock bolt plug. For a temporary down and dirty "get you off the mountain" repair you might get lucky and cut a couple strips of alum shim stock from a beer/soda can. insert in buggered threaded hole. "With a new fresh washer" insert old bolt plug. Alum can shim stock is soft and about 0.003" and may/should let you get the bolt threads enough bite to get it tight enough for the" new" sealing washer to do it's job.

Sorry to disagree, but good threads deeper into the whole allows a longer bolt to have purchase allowing the washer to seal.

This https://www.ebay.com/itm/Oil-Pan-Thread ... N7G1iZKY4Q will do the job easy. Repair kit M13x1,5 comes with tap drill, new drain plug, gasket for small money. Just turn the tap drill in, no boring needed.

Ok, yeah if the hole has 20mm of thread where most are still good a new 20mm bolt should work with a new crush washer. Worth a shot I guess.

When you wanto to use a wider plug than the next size, you need to drill before. For example: you have a torn out threat M 12 and want to use 15mm plug, you need to drill to 14mm and then tap with the tool included in the set. The included tap drill is for the next size from original.
I personally would take off the oil pan and place it on the work bench (or if you have, the drill machine´s machine bed) to get an absolute vertical tapping. Otherwise the sealing ring won´t do it´s job properly.
That´s clear anyway, I just wanted to add in fact...(I know I´m way too German :mrgreen: )
