Left tail light covering?

Post by Pete1163 » Thu Jul 04, 2019 10:54 pm

I recently purchased and am the proud owner of a 2006 Ural Patrol. I have been looking for a better picture or what I would need to fix my tail light wires. I bought it this way and although it works fine, the wires are exposed, and one isn't even connected. It looks like it was rewired, but I am not sure why. Is there a part like a protective tubing that this is supposed to have? Does that other wire need to be attached? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

They come with a short section of wire wrap over the exposed area, like so...

On my 2001 Patrol, most of the wiring harness is simply wound electrical tape.

It's rear turn signal, like yours, was not original, but someone wired it with two-conductor wire, as opposed to the OEM "hot wire, chassis ground" configuration. I returned it to stock.

Obviously, that splice on your signal wire isn't original either. You could slip some heat-shrink tubing or split wire-loom over the wires, if it concerns you greatly.

My guess is that the wire you're holding is a ground, possibly for the tail light, and was attached at the turn signal stud, definitely not original.
You can check to see if it's a ground or hot with a test light and visual inspection of where it terminates.

Welcome aboard, where are you located?

It's our pleasure to assist.

When you get a chance, go ahead and update your signature line with your year and model of Ural, along with your location. This gives readers of your post context about what you're posting.

You're about an hour and 45 minutes' ride from me. If you get a hankering to ride the Blue Ridge Parkway, let me know and we can meet-up.

Also, 2011 Patrol owner Waffl6 is about an hour's ride from you, over in Odenton, Maryland.

While I live in New Jersey, I have family in Great Falls VA, that I visit several time per year, and it's not uncommon for me to have one of my sidecar rigs with me. I've even driven my rig from Great Falls to down around where Chad lives, my sister in law and her family have a vacation home in Charlottesville VA, and I have a secret source  of Ural parts down in that area.
After studying your photo a little closer, the turn signal housing on your rig would normally be used on the front fender of a truck or on the fender of a tractor and utilizes a dual filament bulb, the brown wire coming out of the mounting stud that appears to be cut and not connected to anything would be for a parking or running light and would not be needed in your application.

Does anyone know a good location to buy authentic turn signals? I was going to post something in the Blackmarket section of the website. I have seen posts like the below one ebay, but they are shipped from Russia. Plus my user manual doesn't really provide any details about the turn signal. I am guessing the front and rear match and that the rear is the long pipe?

Personally I'm not a purist, there are better quality and more stylish options out there, I'd probably put something else on the rig, just not that "Lollypop" light you have on there now.
I have one off an old Honda or some other Japanese bike on the front left of my 2005 GearUp almost since it was new, it's the one turn signal that never gives me any problems.
Good luck whatever you decide to do.
