Weirdly broken rocker?

Post by eastbloc » Sun Jun 23, 2019 5:42 pm

It looks to me like a piece of the rocker is missing. This is on the ‘02 which had ingested some mystery metal into the combustion chamber.
Anyone seen this? Is it a casting failure or what?

It looks possibly like there are some witness marks near the missing section, almost like someone was whacking it with a hard object.

Should I replace this rocker?

It looks like they took the casting flash off with a hammer.
If it's not showing any signs of cracking, I'd grind/polish it and use it.

That missing chunk was likely a casting flaw and happened during the after-casting clean up process before the rocker was machined and installed in the motor. If you've got metal bits in the cyl, seriously doubt they came from the rocker casting. Granted not normal or pretty but that's not a critical stress spec area of the rocker casting. If there are no visible cracks in the casting, I'd run it as-is.
