What? How? Why? This just cracked open on me.

I do not know what happened. I was driving about 45 - 50 and just shifted up into 4th and I felt the bike move in a manner I would expect if my tire suddenly went flat and it was a bit frightening when the bike suddenly moved like a snake glides with the tail moving left to right.

I pulled over and was looking at this. 2017 gear UP I am under warranty 18 months owned, bought brand new, only about 2,000 miles as driving is impacted by weather in IOWA.

The part I call it as the 'Shaft Drive'. View is from top.

Is there anything in my driving and shifting that could have caused this? I just cannot figure that idea out in my head what I might do that would cause this.

I think it mighty be maybe a defective part?

Could it have been a problem in assembly of the gears? The shifting was always rough and clunked, but I was told by the selling dealership and also when I brought in in for maintenance on the maintenance schedule it was how the bikes were and it was normal.

Well, now I am not alone anymore. In my case it was caused by the nut that connects handlebar with seat.

Your final drive was loose.
The 4 nuts not tight down or check during breaking period.

I've a 2011 GU that started loosening the studs of the FD. Even with Red Loctite two just wouldn't stay put. Safety wired the nuts on the studs, and problem solved; nuts hold the studs. Still check every time I ride.

Search for thread by Tomcatfixer on loose FD mounting bolts. There are a number of fixes, all discussed in that thread. Basically the holes in the FD are too large for the bolts that go through them. Unless you put bushings of some sort in the holes or around the bolts, the constant torque will whack at the case and cause cracks first and then failure.

Should be covered under warranty, but worth the fix as insurance against it happening again.

(I'm being an a$$hole and not just providing the thread 'cause we've had a lot of folks join recently who haven't learned how to use the search function. Not trying to be unfriendly, but for an incredible number of things there are already solutions on the forum if you just look for them. Teach a man how to fish...learn how to search.)

Didn't realize the GU was a 4 bolted 2WD - we don't have them where I come from.

Check your nuts, men - often and early :)

Just to clarify, the OP has a GU. Tomcatfixer’s issue was with the two bolt play of a 1WD. Gobium stated correctly, you need to make sure the bolts are tight on both models. Learn to do the maintenance yourself. Know your rig and you’ll learn overtime what’s normal and when it’s not.

At one time Gobium offered some special order nuts that would "bite" and help resolve this as well.

What Lokiboy said is a ground truth - know your ride and it will pay off. Hope you have an easy fix....

I have the impression 2WD FD’s are way more fagile than the 1WD even if not used in 2WD so much.

I like to check the tightness of my FD nuts every 200 - 300 miles, roughly. (Not found a loose one yet.) Usually part of a general check of "critical fasteners" for tightness.

Same here. Got tired of rehashing.

Grumpy time over. Time to grab a linguisa roll and catch the ferry to the mainland. Homeward bound.
