Alternator noise, help me get home!!

Post by Cueball » Fri May 17, 2019 9:35 pm

After 3900 miles in the southwest us in the last 2 weeks, I'm 308 miles from home in Kilgore, tx with my alternator knocking badly. Any ideas on making the last 308 kiles??
Never rode a sidecar rig until today when I traded one of my bikes for a 2012 patrol. Think I'll learn by the time in turn 70 in july? :D

For 308 miles, I would pull the alternator and go total loss.
I may not be good, but I'm slow.

Won't it throw oil out? If not, that's what I'll do. Got another battery with me

Might stop by a hardware store and pickup a round electrical outlet cover. Drill a couple of holes and seal with some Gorilla Tape. It only has to last a few hours.

Just a thought...WWID? Take alternator assembly out, remove alt adapter from alternator, reinstall adapter (if not the part making noise)...go home. If u ain't home yet, good luck.

Don't forget to tape up all the electrical connections. Also, if the alternator is disconnected, your e-start won't work.......you'll have to kick start.....then ride it!

It should if you ground the charging light wire. :D

Unfortunately, it seized up when I tried to get to a parts store Saturday morning. Called geico for a tow, rented a car to drive the final 388 miles home. Drove back today with my jeep and trailer and retrieved it. Haven't tried to diagnose it other than pulling the alternator when it seized and discovering that it w@* still seized sans alternator.
I'm gonna need help , I'm sure.

So can we assume it wasn't your alternator that was knocking?

I'm not sure. I used my tire iron stethoscope when it was making the noise and the knocking definitely seemed to be coming from the alternator. Maybe it was transferring noise from elsewhere. Haven't had a chance to do anything with it yet (lawn horrible after being gone 3 weeks), any guidance appreciated.

You will get lot's of suggestions, but I would pull the spark plugs and slowly try to turn it over using the kickstart. Eliminate that it isn't hydro-locked first.

Started investigating today. First drained the oil. Drain plug had a good bit of large metal dwarf and the oil had a brass colored metallic sheen.

Pulled valve covers, left one had good amount of what appeared to be aluminum flakes, right one not so much.

Pulled starter to check clutch bolts, but could barely turn flywheel with a screwdriver. Didn't want to break a tooth so I stopped.

Any advice, ideas, or direction much appreciated!!
