Alternator Gasket

Post by URAL CT » Wed Mar 27, 2019 5:05 pm

OK folks...how can one prevent the gasket that goes between the alt. cush drive & the motor from getting torn everytime you remove, reinstall, and adjust the alternator lash (by sound). Everytime I rotate the alternator, the gasket tears.
If I adjust it by feel, I still have to move the alternator some to match the mark. Often times it tears too. Need some advice, please...thanks.

No experience in this area but some folks use a bit of grease on a gasket they don't want sticking to anything. Maybe a thin coating of grease on both sides of the gasket would work.

For me, it's about (1.) ensuring that both crankcase and alternator sealing surfaces are as clean and smooth as possible and (2.) kind of supporting and pulling the alternator away from the crankcase when adjusting. I've torn some gaskets in the past, but I've been on a run of good luck and maybe this technique has been contributing to it? Also, maybe try a paronite gasket, instead of paper?

Is adjusting your alternator something you need to do from time to time or something? I actually just had to have my alt seal replaced because it was leaking oil. One of the last repairs under warranty... :gahhh:

Adjusted alternator when I installed Herzog gears in tower. No need to adjust it ever again as far as I can tell (by a couple of dial indicator checks at the back of the cush drive).

It will fail, even if you don't ever adjust your alternator. Mine just went out for the 2nd time.

My adapter has an O-ring on the portion that inserts into the timing gear chest. This O-ring effectively seals the junction. The gasket is just suspenders added to the belt. Prevents water from getting between the flange and the mount. That's about all.

Well that is good. Every time my paper one tears or gets a crack, it leaks. :(

Proper O-ring for the application?

You are fortunate, Ron. Not all Urals possess such technology.

Doesn't look like it would be all that difficult to machine an o-ring groove in that piece if a guy really wanted it to happen.

Maybe Hylomar Universal Blue or Permatex 85420 Permashield would be worthy of consideration as a dressing if the o-ring isn't used.
