New Aluminum Fiber Gaskets

Post by Вуди » Thu Dec 27, 2018 2:32 pm

Here's your new and "improved" aluminum and fiber head gaskets used on a 2012 I rebuilt. The moly (I'm assuming) coating flaked off everywhere and the new aluminum sheet metal rings are substantially weaker than the old style. I sourced these from Crawford, and he said these are the only ones IMWA carries anymore and that he's had several customers run into the same issue. I torqued to slightly below specs (36 ft lbs) to avoid pulling the head bolts, but as that's only slightly below spec, above what many of you are torquing to, and I only made it 20km before running into massive issues that lead to me pulling the heads to find these, I think IMZ may have to rethink these gaskets.

Did'ja send these images to the folks at IMWA? This is the kind of quality control feedback they need.

We all know IMZ can/does have quality control issues with their own parts but some of it is they source crap suppliers parts. Sure doesn't surprise me it's happening in Russia also. Crap head gaskets has plagued us old cars guys in the US for a couple decades now. Even the used to be old school good-guy outfits like Fel-Pro has gone to crap for American V8's. I know copper is more expensive than alum reinforced formulated pressed mush. Buy hey sometimes it just costs what it costs to make a quality part. For head gaskets Copper is King.

Too bad the market is not big enough for someone to produce a copper head gasket. You'd never need to buy them again.

I'll probably take heat from the "Experts" and "Know it alls", but I've reused the old style head gaskets multiple times.
I spray both sides of the gasket and the mating surfaces on the head and cylinder with CopperKote and install as usual, probably wouldn't do that if I were charging someone to work on their rig, but I don't do that.
I've got a small hoard of gaskets, and in retrospect, I probably should have bought more. I wonder if the old style are still available from the FSU or European sources?

Technically you could with time and skill if you can buy/start with the proper thickness flat stock. Would "I" attempt it? Nope, I know(have a loose grip on) my time/skill/patience/economic level. :(

These "new" gaskets have been in use for a few years, and I don't recall any mention of issues with them failing. No sign of any internal or external issues with them on my M70. Composition cylinder head gaskets aren't intended to be reused (yes, I have done it...on small engines).

It seems premature to condemn them out of hand based on such limited anecdotal evidence.

Any update on this?
I'm sure there would be enough interest for them to crank out more than a few for Urals.

Years ago I used this guy in Arizona to cut some special copper rings for electrical equipment. https://coppergaskets.us/
He is a hell of a nice guy and even though it was a small order he worked with me personally to get it just right. Set samples to check first and all that.
With the copper rings (shading coils) I was able to continue using perfectly serviceable older equipment rather than spend thousands for replacements.
If you sent him a new gasket, he can make copper gaskets.
I may not be good, but I'm slow.
