95' Ural 650 Project -- Mothra35

Post by Mothra35 » Thu Sep 28, 2017 12:55 pm

So for $100 bucks I said, "I'll get this "weathered" Ural a chance at another life." I am going to SLOWLY build this bike. So :lurker:
The Trans shifted into neutral, and reverse, and the motor turns over. Two extra rims with tires are included too.

My plans are to:
Minimize the electronics :gahhh:
Add a side car :deal: (Building my own tub)
To make it "my own"
And of course just have fun with it

As of now it is in my shed, Next up will be, draining fluids, striping it down, labeling parts and figuring out what all is needed. Meanwhile the motor, carbs, trans, and rear gear box will soak in cleaner as I work on ascetics.

PS: They weren't selling the truck :(

You are a man of great vision.

Iwonder what happened to the sheet metal.

I think my first check would be to pull the jugs to look for pitting. Common issue with boxers left to deal with Muddah Nature.

Next check would be to check for crank runout on the pinion gear and the flywheel. Oh wait, no starter. Oh well, check the pinion. If you have runout there, you are can be pretty confident you'll have it at the OD of the flywheel face as well. You'll see when you get the tranny off.

I hope you are pleasantly surprised by all your checks.

Well, haven't really pulled anything off of it yet, looked at her yesterday and missing some stuff, besides the obvious sidecar, gas tank, fenders and seat. Throttle is gone, as most of the electronics, Rectifier ( I thing that is what it is) is missing just the outer shell is there,,but have the black box still(guessing that's the ing. control). Steering dampener is there but not complete. Going to need new cables and a Air Cleaner housing also.

I pulled the oil dip stick and it was full and slight brown,,,not milky or black. :o Trans was full too. (Didn't check the rear)

Color? I am either going to rattle can flat black it or strip it and clear coat over the rust and steel.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

:?: NOW FOR THE QUESTIONS :?:

What ignition systems can be used with the 650?
Is there a PDF manual I can download for this engine and Model Ural?
What is the "Air Shutoff" leaver for? (a dampener that opens and closes on the mid intake tube..I thought it was a chock but there are chokes in the carbs....also lucky me they left it close so minimal moister got to the carbs)
What is the "up-grenade" Alternator to get for this thing?

That's all I can think of now

As long as he doesn't paint it 'satin nutmeg', we're good here. :D

I have two gas tanks that came with my RPOC project bike, neither of which fit it. They should have the proper bracketry to fit your 95's frame. You cover the shipping and either one is yours. Act now, and I'll throw in the filler strainer I ordered at no additional charge. :)

I been following your build, its good stuff. I am not quite the entertainer as you are my thread will probably just be pics and asking questions.

I appreciate the offer on the Tank but that is one of the things I do have, While back I ordered a Tool Box Tank for my 05' but it didn't fit I think it will fit on this thou,,,if not I will make it.

If you still got that rusted tub I may be interested

Thank you. I aim to "infotain". :D

No problem. I have a few "onesie-twosie" spares of things, so I'll keep an eye on this thread to see if I have anything you need.

I do still have it, but it's horribly deteriorated. I was considering doing a gobium-style custom modification project with it, but I haven't fully decided WHAT I'm gonna do with it.

The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly

Post by Mothra35 » Mon Oct 23, 2017 8:32 am

Well I am just going to leave this here

Image

That's the bad mixed with Ugly now the good is

Image

Owner before installed a Ducati ignition .... guessing it works  .......it was a lot cleaner and newer than the rest of the stuff, the way the ignition plate, and timing cover gear cover flat head screws easily came out...I would say was recently installed.

So if anything I could sell this and make a profit :D

Still going as plan: To take it apart and soak the engine for a long time and see what happens...in the meantime maybe consider (and save up) a new power plant.

Ooh... fugly jug. I understand that pistons can be a challenge for the 650 engines. If the pistons are salvageable, might be easier to find stock bore jugs and use your pistons with new jugs. That's what I did when I found serious pitting my bores.

And speaking of pitted bores, my cylinders are much better than yours appear to be. They would probably clean up with a first oversize, if you can find the pistons. I also have a NOS pre-electric starter crankcase if you want to pursue rebuilding this engine. If you are interested, let know and I'll take a look at them and post pictures of the bores.
