The seller has relisted it for $3,200. Anyone nearby that can go take a look at it?
Sorry, man. I'm always up for checking out a local bike but thats a little too far away for me.

I appreciate it. It's about a 9 hour ride for me, that's why I was looking for someone a bit more local to let me know if it's worth the trek.

It looks like a pretty good motorcycle.
If it’s what you want and you have the $3,200,
Take the cash and whatever you plan to haul it home in and go. You can always offer less for it when you get there.
Before going, I would want to see a photo of both sides of the title and the VIN tag on the motorcycle. If it makes you feel better, ask the seller for a video of it running and possibly driving.
A Bavarian Classic is a nice model and with new Ural’s topping $20k that one looks pretty good, but it is a 650, so you need to be prepared for all that comes along with that.
Other than hearing it run and shift there’s not much more for someone to look at that you can’t see in the photos.
Go get it!

Thanks for the advice, jaybird. I am seriously considering it.
What issues with the 650 are you referring to? I know someone already mentioned the grenade alternator. Any other 650 or BC model specific items I should be aware of?

What issues with the 650 are you referring to?
Not to answer for Jay, but off the top of my head:
- Weaker 5-piece crankshaft
- Wear-prone fine-splined driveshaft
- Lower power
- All-drum brakes
- Russian shocks
- Fine-threaded fasteners
- Electrical gremlins
- Faded electrical wiring coloring (all beige wires!)
- Not-so-straight steel rims
I know someone already mentioned the grenade alternator.
Actually, the "grenade" alternator isn't a problem, as long as you double-nut the alternator casing studs to ensure they don't vibrate off.

+1 on what Chad said! Denso alt and Ducati ignition will run you right about 1k, drum brakes need cleaned and adjusted every year for optimum work, wheel bearings need greased every time you change tires, aftermarket steering damper is a plus, quality on builds of 650 during the 90's was horrible, machining wasn't much better, who wants to buy one and tear it down to check everything, crank trueness and piston wrist pin fitment, replace crank big end bearing with jap or USA made bearings

It sounds like all you 650 owners should just crush your rigs and throw them away, including all the 650 rigs still running around the EU and FSU, better yet just send them to me, I’ll get rid of them for you :D
The BC was one of the deluxe models that IMZ once offered, finding one in that condition will be increasingly more difficult.
There are probably more 650 engines running around in the world than 750’s at this point, and some of the nicest running and looking rigs I’ve seen have been 650’s. Yes they are a little more hands on, but aren’t they all, especially once that warranty runs out.
If I where interested in that rig, I would probably want to buy it for sub $3k, but I already have a ton of Ural’s/Dneprs, and plenty of “real” Bavarian classics.
Personally I wouldn’t be afraid of it, but I know what I’m in for, and I’m a glutton for punishment anyway.
Wouldn’t that be a nice motorcycle with an R75 or R80 engine? Or just keep that 650 running, when you get them dialed in, they sure do run nice :D

Well, now, c'mon, Jay. Knowing the weaknesses is not the same as bitching about the weaknesses. I'm far from ready to give up on my 650 triplets. As you mentioned, once dialed-in, the 650 motor is a little honey.

Still on the list Dnepr/Chang Jiang flathead,
You might call Erickson Air Museum in Madras. They have one. Not sure its for sale but its not related to the collection (mostly WWII aircraft, heavy to US but others as well)
