Pines Barrens Ride and MotoAmerica Cup Races Sunday, 9/8/19

Post by stagewex » Fri Sep 06, 2019 11:56 am

A few of my 2 wheel riding buddies are getting together for a ride in The Pines on Sunday, 9/8/19.
And also going to the Superbike Cup races in Millville later on in the day as well.
Kinda ambitious but what the heck.

I was hoping to ride out of Turtle Run Campground but after speaking to co-owner Rich this morning he's not serving breakfast till 9:00am.
We want to be a few miles into the forest by then so... anyone want to join on 2 or 3 wheels here's the info. Nice introduction to the Pines especially if you are thinking about attending the JDH later next month. Or a nice tune-up ride if you have. Sunny and in the low 80's so wear light but appropriate safety gear.

Sunday, 7:30am-8:00am:
Meet at Angie’s Corner Cafe for Breakfast, 750 Rt.206, Hammonton, New Jersey 08088.

Not interested in breakfast… few miles down the road meet at:

Parking/Bike-Drop-off/Start-off: Hit the trails by 9:00am or earlier
Atsion Ranger Office, 744 Rt. Rt. 206, Shamong, NJ

Ride till 2:00-2:30pm, Load the bikes and head over to NJ Motorsports Park, 8000 Dividing Creek Road, Millville, NJ for the MotoAmerica Cup Races. If we are having too much fun riding we’ll blow-off the races.

Here’s the racetrack schedule for Sat & or course Sunday. We wouldn’t be seeing any of the practice or qualifying runs, just the main 3 Superbikes races themselves starting at 3:00pm.

MotoAmerica ran last weekend on Pittsburgh so this is a continuing points tour for the riders. I’ve only attended the Vintage racing and swap-meet weekends at this track but it is a really beautiful layout and location.

Some video:

PM if interested in the ride or meeting at the track or both. I think we are 5 or 6 so if you are piloting a sidecar plenty of help getting you un-stuck if that happens. I'll bring my Massdan Rope-Puller.
Sticking to the Jeep roads and what passes for "a road" in The Pines, no single-track crap so sidecar friendly.

Wish I could go but I'm working on some projects around the house.
Have fun and I'll see you at the JDH.

I can’t woods ride tomorrow as I need to work, but I’m thinking of riding out on my Retro and having breakfast with you guys.
Are you still planning on breakfast at 7:30am at Angie’s?

Almost got 2 Urals to go but Dave/Recycled didn't want to be the only sidecar.
JayBird did meet us for breakfast but didn't ride. Always great seeing him no matter what.

Me, my buddy Rick who traveled up from Maryland for this ride and Jaybird.

I did travel down on Saturday night from work and NYC arriving after midnight. I had grand illusions of camping out in the back of my Jeep (I have the bigger 4-door Unlimited one now) but ya know... parking out in the huge field by the Atsion Ranger Station in the deepest darkness and thinking about perhaps... the Jersey Devil... I went a few miles down to Hammonton and stayed at the Econolodge.

We all met at Angie's for breakfast as planned and as mentioned Jaybird came by too. Dropped bikes back at the field. Five (5) of us, basically last years crew/team from the Pine Barrens 500. After 10 years that event is cancelled this year so I really wanted to see and ride with this mix of bikes and guys again. Also picked up 2 more riders on CRF250's who tagged along with us for a few hours so we became 7.

Really did get into the woods at 9:00am or a little before which was a good thing since the weather was rather warm later in the day, 82 degrees and Sunny/perfect. Main lead is a weekly Pine Barrens rider thus his navigation and pace which is fast and while he choose a more sand than I usually like, a grand day of riding. And we stuck to the bigger roads and trails so would have been perfect for a sidecar which from time-to-time I wish I had been piloting. I have this whole route on my GPS for the future. I dropped my bike twice going too slow in deep sand and crashed into the woods once going too fast on a patch of mud. Shoulder-pads and armour did their job.

Weirdest thing I ever saw this particular day was someone towing a very cool tear-drop trailer behind a Jeep on one of the more sandy roads, odd!

Even though we started riding in Wharton State Forest we easily made out way into and by Brendan Byrne State Forest where we emerged for hotdogs at a famous-to-us roadside stand. Then back into the woods to make out way back.

We did 5 hours and 70 miles of riding, packed up the bikes and headed 30 miles to Millville, NJ to catch the final 3 MotoAmerica Cup races at the NY MotorSports Park. There was a long delay for the final event because of a terrible accident in the first lap which I have on the video below. Both riders walked to the ambulance so thinking they'll be okay. Defending Champion Andrew Lee won the Stock 1000 Race (15 Laps) on his Kawasaki. Threw his gloves to the fans in the stands as is the ceremonial practice. Very cool.

Combining the Pine Barrens Riding and then Superbike Races has somehow spawned, at least in my mind a new annual event, Hmmmm.

Here's a 3.5 minute video combining trail riding with the Superbike racing at the track, enjoy:

Thought you guys could appreciate a picture of the numerous "blends" of fuel available at the racetrack. Of course that is if you were willing to spend $9.00 to $10.00 for a gallon of gas:
