I'm now in a little danger of not attending.

It seems I have a tendency to screw with my bike right before a rally. In this case, I installed 30mm handlebar risers. The lower left hand clamp bolt took a little more effort than the other three, but I got everything reasonably snug. I felt that the left handlebar clamp was just a bit too loose, so I have the ratchet another little "bump" and snapped the bolt. I tried to extract the stuck threaded portion with a combination of heat, PB Blaster, and vice-grip pliers, but I only succeed in making the exposed part smaller in diameter. SO, I broke out my drill and started drilling a succession of larger and larger holes to use my screw extractor tools. BUT, as is my specialty, I broke off a drill bit inside the broken bolt. At this point, I think the only solution is to weld a nut onto what's left of the bolt and use a wrench to extract it.
Why have I been waiting to purchase a MIG welder and teach myself to weld?!

you know, there is a whole lot of truth to the statement, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, especially when it comes to Urals...pretty sure that is why I've had 90K of pretty much trouble free riding on the Retro, I don't screw with it, don't try to make it better, just ride and maintain...(not counting flat tires that I seem to have a lot of). Let's not bring up the M70...that just stays broke. Good luck, see you this weekend and even more good luck with your new welder.

Looks like I'm out of the rally, UNLESS I can get in touch with Terry Crawford and he's got a salvaged upper triple clamp available.

New triple clamps run $99 and have a two-week wait. The machinist claimed that the time required and his labor will cost me well over that. Plus, one of the other bolt holes is slightly wallowed out. Also, he can't get to it until tomorrow night.

Why do I do these things to myself? Should've just left well enough alone. :(

I really appreciate the offer, but if I'm gonna go to the trouble of dragging the bike 6.5 hours away, I would prefer a "guaranteed" repair, such as a Terry Crawford replacement part.
Unfortunately, he's not answering his 'phone or e-mail. :(

I'm reasonably certain that I could modify it to make it work, OR just replace the cT's plastic "dash" with the Tourist's metal one and shuffle the idiot lights around, but it's a lot of last-minute effort. Instead, I'm gonna surrender and head to my new house for the weekend, where I'll perform unnecessary home improvements.
UNLESS I get a "Hail Mary" call from Terry saying, "I've got your part and I'm bringing it to Asheville.

CALL TERRY! The best way to get to him, but he may already be on the road.

Chad. Can you trailer it here? I weld. A few minutes work to weld a nut on that stub.
yeah, I might be addicted to brake fluid. But I can stop any time I want.

I had originally planned to trailer it, but I was hoping for a guaranteed fix. I tried the nut-weld trick several times and there's no longer anything meaningful for the weld to attach.

I've already dropped out of the rally and, instead, hauled a load of stuff to my new house.

Vicki and I are riding out from Sanford NC. Leaving here around 10AM. Tenting out there. I hope it isn't a mud Bog at the campground. If anyone is there already, what are the conditions like for camping tomorrow? See ya

I got to the campground at about 2pm and the water was over the bridge, It finally receded and stopped raining around 4pm but everything seems to be starting to dry out.

I plan to attend and have a tent site reserved. Just myself and the two younger boys this year, wife has a wedding to shoot on Saturday. Bike is still laid up in storage but will come anyway. Looking forward to seeing everyone!
