Special Flag Day at Our House

Post by LRP » Fri Jun 14, 2019 7:06 pm

My daughter Jennifer works in the DOT in DC. Last Thursday she had facilitated a meeting of Orlando area police officers concerning
impaired driving. After the meetings, she was able to stay overnight with us and then we took her to the airport Saturday.
She presented me with a gorgeous flag that she arranged to be flown over the Capital on the day of my 75th birthday.
The flag is 5 1/2' X 9 1/2' with sewn stripes and embroidered stars. She mentioned the flag to the police officers at the meeting
and an officer who had served in the Army in Afghanistan volunteered to fold it. To me, that added a special connection to the flag.
I will be displaying it next to the fireplace in our den when I obtain a nice display case for the flag and certificates.

Very nice. Did you give your daughter an extra long hug? Special girl you have there. Hope you enjoy your flag as much as we did ours.....flew ours in the front yard for years. The flag is gone now, but still have the certificate of authenticity.

Strange how it can mean so much to some.....while others disrespect, and actually seem to hate it.

That's great, Dick!

Not to jump on your thread, but I also have a Flag Day connection. Last year, when I chose the ceremony date to close out my 26-year Navy career, I did not realize that I had chosen Flag Day, but I ended up surrounded by them anyway! Yesterday, I had a wonderful ceremony attended by many shipmates, family, and friends, including some Uralista!

Happy Birthday, flying a Cessna in a war zone definitely would make me believe that you earned that and more!! Nice honor by your daughter.

Tomcatfixer,

Thanks for your career service. I had always wanted the Navy guys to adopt me when I was in Viet Nam. I had the honor of flying
cover for several PBRs and they always had steak and langustas which beat the hell out of our MACV food. Navy Charlie model gunships
were always quick to respond when I found targets beyond the capabilities of the 8 rockets I carried. One of my most vivid memories was observing main gun fire from the New Jersey onto Nui Gai mountain near Cambodia and the Gulf. I orbited about 500' below the apogee and watched the flying box cars (16" X 8') projos dropping in on the target.
Oh yea, then there was the time when I was flying along the Cambodian border at 1000' (high for me) looking for infiltrators and I caught movement to my upper right. An F4B with his gear and flaps down was flying upside down in formation. He waved, rolled over, cleaned up the airplane and punched the afterburner and disappeared.

The sights we see, in the service of our country, eh? While I danced in the orchestrated chaos of carrier flight deck operations, watched the 20mm Vulcan cannon of our Close-In Weapons System annihilate a target missile, and seen countless Tomahawk cruise missiles light up the night sky in all directions, like an Independence Day fireworks show, I would have LOVE to have seen a battleship do it's thing. Thank YOU, Dick, for setting up your successors, like me, for, uh, 'success'! :D

This was mine - after 31 years, my wife finally called it a day - almost a full year after I did...not quite the stories as being on deck watching TLAM's or Vulcan's at incoming, it was 107's in the night, C-RAM (ground based Vulcan) shooting a ghosts, and the occasional VBIED - not to mention skyping with my bride while SHE was under a rocket attack in Baghdad....Good fun after all was over and done with - this is the best memory I will carry....her getting the chance to see her friends for the last time in uniform
