How often should cleaning be done? Do you wait for a problem to develop?

Really, really helpful. You and others are opening my eyes to the fact that the fear (maybe more of a concern of making what was a little problem into an overhaul) of doing something is far greater than actually doing it. It's not rocket science and knowing what to expect takes the mystery and guess work out of the equation.
Thanks

Thanks

Re: Ural: understand & servicing electric starter
Great video. Thanks Van. Now I need to take those broken and apart starters I have to see if I can get them to work
I do have one that is rusted together, meaning the outside case with windings and the rotating shaft (armature?). Any suggestions in how and what to use to try and free them up without ruining the windings

Impact out the four nuts that hold the magnetic fields and blast holes with pb plaster. See if that would help.motoleo wrote:Great video. Thanks Van. Now I need to take those broken and apart starters I have to see if I can get them to work

Thanks, that is what I was thinking but I wasn't sure if the pb blaster (or Kroil) would effect the varnish/coating around the wires.gobium wrote:Impact out the four nuts that hold the magnetic fields and blast holes with pb plaster. Re: Ural: understand & servicing electric starter
Gobium,
One other check you can do with the solenoid. It actually serves two purposes.
1. It pushes the starter gear into position on the flywheel.
2. There is a relay inside there that when power is applied to the small blade connector, a relay also connects the battery power lug to the lug with the large white wire on it. This provides +12VDC to the starter motor to turn.

Re: Ural: understand & servicing electric starter
. Removing frozen bolts I've never had damage issues using Kroil or PBlaster (my favorites). For cleaning start/gen internal parts I've used Naptha with no harm to the windings. Not sure but I think(?) the windings are clear coated with lacquer so don't use a lacquer paint thinner as a solvent. If it's a shellac coating don't use alcohol. A quick call to your local auto elec shop will set you straight on solvents.motoleo wrote: Thanks, that is what I was thinking but I wasn't sure if the pb blaster (or Kroil) would effect the varnish/coating around the wires.

Re: Ural: understand & servicing electric starter
Great video!
I have problems with starter on my Ural Patrol 2009. After I have removed back plate of starter I saw that 4 springs that press the brushes are burned out, and that insulator tape on back of the starter cover is missing. Does anyone know original dimensions for starter springs, so I can buy new one.
Thanks
