2017 GU Speedometer Failure -- Reads 40 mph @ 0

Woe unto you that bought the first model year of a major remake, perhaps this section can help address any 2014 and later model Ural "imperfections". Here's a special section for folks with the latest rigs to discuss 2014 and later model-related topics such fuel injection, 3-wheel disc brakes, hydraulic steering dampers, spin-on oil filters and other anomalies that don't belong on true Russsian motorcycle ;-P We've gone from using big hammers and greasy wrenches to needing computers and Ouija boards in order to fix our rigs.

Please keep this section specific to issues pertaining to 2014 and later models such as fuel injection, sidecar and rear disc brakes and so forth. Ask general or non-2014 and later specific questions in the main Hammerin' & Wrenchin' section.

2017 GU Speedometer Failure -- Reads 40 mph @ 0

Post by JustSomeRandomDude » Wed Jul 08, 2020 7:10 pm

2017 Ural GU, about 6800 miles on odo, about 250 of those are mine.
I just got back from getting it aligned at Raceway in Salem after the tree incident. It's driving much better now ...

So today, I drive it in to work, and on the way back, I hopped off the freeway to call Spouse. Rolling through gears while leaving the rest area, I noticed the speedo was indicating about 40 mph over actual speed, topping out an an indicated 100mph or so. (Land speed record?) I've been spending a lot of time watching the speedo as I heard the rpm/speed noises, so I was watching as it went nuts.
Swapped to watching my phone's speedo function and got home without going too slow.
Bike's sitting in the drive now, doing "40 mph" while sitting still. Any thoughts on what might be happening? Where's a good place to begin replacing bits? Speedo sending unit?
Much thanks!

The sending unit would not cause that. Does the speedometer go through its self test when you turn the key on?

It did when I started it up just before it went nutty.

Thanks, Burt ... just went out and turned the ignition on. It ran through the self-test and re-zeroed. I need to get some gas, so I'll see if the issue returns.

If it happens again I would suggest checking the connectors to make sure they have a good connection.

Change the digital display to speed and see if it matches the needle.

My 2018 had it's speedometer replaced after about 8 months because while the digital display showed correct speed, the needle had a mind of it's own. Seems to be a problem with the Acewell units, not sure bad batch, bad generation, but was told it's since been solved. Replacement speedo has been ok.

If bike is out of warranty, I prefer Speedhut units, but installing one would require doing some 2016 style dash lights vs the all in one of the Acewell.

I'd go to your local dealer and do a polite request that since the early units tended to be faulty, that you should at least get a price consideration for the purchase of a new one. You are relatively close to the Mothership so you might cause Ural HQ or send an email to them and see if they will not work with you.
