Dealer Help

Woe unto you that bought the first model year of a major remake, perhaps this section can help address any 2014 and later model Ural "imperfections". Here's a special section for folks with the latest rigs to discuss 2014 and later model-related topics such fuel injection, 3-wheel disc brakes, hydraulic steering dampers, spin-on oil filters and other anomalies that don't belong on true Russsian motorcycle ;-P We've gone from using big hammers and greasy wrenches to needing computers and Ouija boards in order to fix our rigs.

Please keep this section specific to issues pertaining to 2014 and later models such as fuel injection, sidecar and rear disc brakes and so forth. Ask general or non-2014 and later specific questions in the main Hammerin' & Wrenchin' section.

Dealer Help

Post by roberd42 » Mon Nov 04, 2019 10:47 am

My 18 GU needs the ECU snorkels and I believe the updated ignition switch. My closest dealer (who id prefer not to use) is 2.5hrs away in Atlanta and the next closest is over 4hrs away in Charlotte.

Has anyone provided a VIN and had a dealer ship these items for self install, or must I load the machine up and take it to the dealer?

Sorry I can not directly answer your Question. I have not heard much good about the Charlotte dealer in regards to Urals although I do not have any direct experience.

Under warranty you ar e going to need to see a dealer. The dealer you bought it from may send you the parts. Other wise you can buy from any dealer.

From what I understand the parts are inexpensive. I believe Harryball under his “Gone Uraling” blog showed how to install the snorkels. If memory serves, an extremely easy thing to do.

Contact Ural.

As the dealer is not close they may agree to use a local shop or let you do your own if you return the original parts.

I will be going through the process with them over my battery. Nearest repair is 300 miles North.

My dealer is 725 miles away. He will help me diagnose issues and then send me the needed parts rapidly. He has done this on three warranty issues on my 18 GU and typically I have the diagnosis and parts within 4 days of the issue developing.

I am concerned that I could cause the dealer trouble if I reveal the name, but I would not own a Ural if he were not so accommodating.

My selling dealer shipped a new ignition switch harness, and the snorkels for the ECUs' barometric sensors, to me via the USPS. Both items were provided gratis under the auspices of my [still in-force] warranty. The harness arrived unannounced, as I wasn't previously aware of the recall. I requested the snorkels via a text message. Easy peasey.

During the sales negotiation, I asked my dealer if he would be willing to provide warranty-related parts directly to me, if or when I asked him to do so. He was agreeable. I prefer to do my own install work when I'm able. More to the point, our arrangement has largely allowed me to avoid driving to MD to pick up the parts. I did go to his place during my fuel tank exchange fiasco, but ground shipping both ways would have been more than the round-trip price of fuel, easily. Just choosing to drive down and back in a day minimized the rig's down time, also.

Performing maintenance or repair work ourselves, to include warranty-related matters, won't void the underlying factory warranty. There is a record-keeping requirement, though, that the owner disregards at his peril. I'm meticulous about such paperwork, and it has paid dividends (for me) when I had to go to the mat for a non-Ural related matter.

Well, my bike is still under warranty and I’m the second owner, purchased out of Portland Ural. I’m in Augusta Ga, and would prefer not to use blue moon, and I guess not Charlotte hearing issues from there as well. Maybe I can call Heindl or Holopaw and see if one of them would help remotely. I don’t mind spending the $40 on the snorkels but the ignition switch id like to have sent to me.

Check with Heindl, if you can get the parts, come on over, we'll get them installed. I've swapped both the snorkel and ignition and a speedo, not a big deal. We are forming a plan now to be riding from Nov 30 down to New Orleans and back over to Holopaw and up, we would be back around Dec 14th to go to the Georgia Sidecar Club party in Greensboro GA if all goes to plan. Come go with us or meet us somewhere along the way (like Holopaw).

I was thinking of trying to make the greensboro meeting. That’s easily within range. I’m a corporate pilot on call for three companies and two different aircraft, so I can’t quite sneak away for a couple days. Plus, I have two little boys that I like to spend time with when I’m not out of town (my motivation to buy another ural so they can ride with me some :)). When your in New Orleans (I get there at least once a month) check out TTRNO, I was a gnats hair from buying a thruxton R from them a couple years ago.

Is there a way to tell if the ignition is the recalled one? My bike has been in for the initial service late last summer, no mention of doing any recalls on the receipt. So I’m assuming it needs to be done since the snorkels aren’t present.

Contact the NHTSA about the problem, as rims are covered by their certification. If other 2013 rims have been affected, they may order a safety recall.

The snorkels are just small pieces of plastic. You shouldn't be charged more than $4, let alone $40, when buying them. Installation is a doddle, also.

As warranty items, they should in fact be gratis.

$10.99/ea plus shipping so maybe closer to $25-30. I agree it’s a 10 cent part but that ain’t the way things work. That’s why I’m looking to get dealer help while there’s some warranty left on her. I’ve bought “aircraft” alternators with “Ford” stamped on them that were $600 just for the associated paperwork.
