Weird Chassis Noise

Woe unto you that bought the first model year of a major remake, perhaps this section can help address any 2014 and later model Ural "imperfections". Here's a special section for folks with the latest rigs to discuss 2014 and later model-related topics such fuel injection, 3-wheel disc brakes, hydraulic steering dampers, spin-on oil filters and other anomalies that don't belong on true Russsian motorcycle ;-P We've gone from using big hammers and greasy wrenches to needing computers and Ouija boards in order to fix our rigs.

Weird Chassis Noise

Post by Camel Jockey » Mon May 07, 2018 10:01 pm

2018 Gear-Up

When the sidecar is either lifted higher than the bike (e.g., sidecar wheel going over a slight rise that the bike isn’t), or drops lower than the bike (e.g., dropping into a depression that the bike isn’t), I hear a noticeable "clunk." Sounds like a bolted joint in the frame is loose and flexing.

It seems to happen when I’m going slow and turning hard either direction too.

I’ve checked all the bolts that I see.

I know my description is vague, but it’s hard to put into words succinctly.

Any ideas???????

Have you checked sidecar driveshaft u-joints, specifically the one next to the final drive?

Also the two clamshell bolts that hold the sidecar to the motorcycle frame. One sits underneath the right cylinder and the other just forward of the final drive.

I'm going to guess one of the strut bolts.

Probably the upper rear, since it's the most difficult to reach.

Check the lock nut on both ends of the struts.

+1

Had a clunk sound every time I backed down the driveway out of my garage. Noticed one of the locknuts had worked itself loose. Tightened her up and no more clunk

Just to close the loop on this one, the only things I could that was loose were a couple of nuts on the "wishbone" of the Rear Suspension Swing Arm where it connects to the FD. I could tighten two of them about 1/8 turn.

That seems to have made the sound go away.

Thanks to everyone for their input!
