Endoscope the Ural inners!

Woe unto you that bought the first model year of a major remake, perhaps this section can help address any 2014 and later model Ural "imperfections". Here's a special section for folks with the latest rigs to discuss 2014 and later model-related topics such fuel injection, 3-wheel disc brakes, hydraulic steering dampers, spin-on oil filters and other anomalies that don't belong on true Russsian motorcycle ;-P We've gone from using big hammers and greasy wrenches to needing computers and Ouija boards in order to fix our rigs.
Forum rules
Please keep this section specific to issues pertaining to 2014 and later models such as fuel injection, sidecar and rear disc brakes and so forth. Ask general or non-2014 and later specific questions in the main Hammerin' & Wrenchin' section.

Endoscope the Ural inners!

Post by EricH » Wed Apr 25, 2018 10:49 am

:o

I bought this Android phone Endoscope a year ago, but haven't used it much.

Cool little $20 gadget!

I was attempting to remove my air cleaner lid to do a filter inspection.

Bike is a '14 T with only 2800 kms.

Since I got pi$$ed at trying to remove the lid....which I didn't..cause I couldn't...so I haven't!....plan B

Hooked up the camera and went probing...
The filter was clean, but I really wanted to scope the branch tubes to check the butterfly valves.
That will be another time.

Why does the factory run the filter backwards?
Downstream, the metal mesh is always the outlet.

Here are pics of the air filter in the box and some pics of the crankcase vent valve in different positions.

If the filter was on in the correct direction, you would never get the lid off. Got my scope a few months ago but haven't really needed to use it yet. Great little tool.

I'm not inferring that you don't know what you are doing. But be careful with that scope. I've seen very seasoned engineering snip off the end of a scope in equipment when moving it while viewing.

Good question why Ivan uses the filter element backwards. My guess is that's the only way he could get it to work and fit in the limited space.

I keep wanting to make a different air box and filter arrangement. But the bike runs so well, I just never get the incentive to fix something that isn't broke.

I replaced the allen screws with thumb screws on the air cleaner, makes it easy to open.

I've seen other filters where the wire mesh is on the outside of the filter such as the trucks at work.

Engine was off for the pics.....I bumped the foot crank and snapped still pics showing the orientation of the crank vent.

Interesting little tool!

Great idea on the Thumb screws!

(It still sucks trying to get the lid completely out)

Do want to try and take the lid off my 2007? I have to remove the whole air box.
We may not have it all together,

Why's that? I had sufficent of room to remove the lid and filter on my 07 Patrol when it had the stock setup.

I can get the top off but trying to get the round cover off the air filter starts to get interesting. Then trying to remove the filter itself is a real squeeze. No to mention putting it all back together again. It is a lot easier to just remove the whole assembly.

When I came up with my air box modification, part of it was a new mount to lower the OE housing to make room for the new taller lid. Perhaps you could do the same?

This is on your 2007 or your 2018? If the newer bike, would you kindly post an image of your mod?
