Carry a spare fuel injector?

Woe unto you that bought the first model year of a major remake, perhaps this section can help address any 2014 and later model Ural "imperfections". Here's a special section for folks with the latest rigs to discuss 2014 and later model-related topics such fuel injection, 3-wheel disc brakes, hydraulic steering dampers, spin-on oil filters and other anomalies that don't belong on true Russsian motorcycle ;-P We've gone from using big hammers and greasy wrenches to needing computers and Ouija boards in order to fix our rigs.
Forum rules
Please keep this section specific to issues pertaining to 2014 and later models such as fuel injection, sidecar and rear disc brakes and so forth. Ask general or non-2014 and later specific questions in the main Hammerin' & Wrenchin' section.

Carry a spare fuel injector?

Post by Camel Jockey » Thu Feb 08, 2018 6:41 pm

I am preparing for a year long trip through Central and Soith America. While I know that decent fuel is generally available, it’s certainly possible that we'll pick up some contaminated stuff. In addition to a pre-filter on the gas tank inlet, and spare fuel filters, I’m wondering if it makes sense to carry a spare injector (or two.)

What is the wisdom of the forum?

I think they are side specific. Kinda pricey for two. On a long trip, I would worry more about kicking and breaking the fuel inlet. I don't know if it is available separately or not. Definitely carry extra filters.
I may not be good, but I'm slow.

Fuel injectors are not side specific. I carry a spare.

Here is something else you want to carry, you will need one for the right side and one for the left side:

Item 26 & 27. They are the little plastic fuel inlet elbows that transition the fuel line to the injector. I've seen people break these off either while riding or getting on/off their bike. If one breaks you are stuck until you have a replacement.

Also, before you start your trip, you will want to go through the air filter system and the fuel system and replace all the one-time-use clamps with hose clamps (but don't use just regular hose clamps.)

For the fuel system, on the pressurized side, you need to use 1/2" fuel injector clamps (found at your local auto parts store).

For the large hose clamps on the airbox hoses and on the compliance fitting, get these:

You will need the 40-60mm sized clamps, 6-each of these.

It is clear that I can't remember what I have heard. I need to keep my yap shut until I am sure or at least surer. With my memory getting worse each year I may be mute by next week.

I want to do the same thing too!! You can pick up the fuel hats from uralne.com. I just picked up a couple myself. I have been thinking about the spare injector as well but those things have a pretty low failure rate in general so as long as you carry plenty of filters then the injector should stay fine..should...

When are you thinking of starting your journey?

For the record, I successfully JB Welded a broken injector elbow and rode that way for a few hundred miles.

I didn't need to -- I bought a spare -- but I wanted to see if it was possible, and it is.
