Everyone pretty much knows the original steering damper on 2017s is junk. Well, 2400 miles into this trip and mine failed but not in the way you might think. It is now a steering resistor. Went to turn and almost couldn't. Had to pull/push hard. At first I was "I didn't realize I was that tired" but then realized the handle bars were holding the turn without me even touching them. Having lunch now, I will deal with it later.

We've had a good run so far today, went through St Louis already heading to Hickman KY to catch the ferry.

Were you able to get going again? Removed the damper for now?

I used pliers to turn the adjustment counterclockwise and it loosened up enough I could leave it on. Still sounds awful, but it lets me turn and still dampens. Will remove it if it gets worse.

Ferry ride was fantastic. Met Doug on a Goldwing who used to own a Ural but sold it a couple of years ago. He rode over on the Ferry with us. (If you read this, Hi Doug)

Overall a good ride today, we hit Natchez Trace tomorrow.

Well, we are back home, had a great ride, ended up with 2729 miles due to a short "rain" day.
My Retro averaged 33.79 mpg over the entire trip. The steering damper failed.

My wife's cT averaged 37.14 mpg!! Interesting. I suspect it is due to her following in my draft instead of plowing new air, but who knows. No failures. However, it is now making a "clicking" noise when being pushed coming from the donut area. I have not investigated yet.

Both rigs used oil at about the same rate using a total of 16 oz between them.

We were pulled out in front of, cut off, stopped in front of and "not seen" numerous times. We accrued about 4 hours of UDF time at restaurants, gas stations, hotels etc... I also literally flipped a bird, I hit a hawk (at low speed) that flew right in front of me.

I have tons of footage, will start posting bite sized videos soon.

Good to hear you made it with no major issues, brakedowns.

We ran about 63mph when we could. Just seemed to settle there and stay on the GPS. Speedo indicated 65 at that speed. My rig hit 73 at some point. On the back roads we ran 55 to 60.
