To St Paul and Back - 2019

Post by harryball » Wed Jul 24, 2019 11:23 am

We are beginning our trip to St. Paul this year and we both decided, let's RIDE! It's worked out to be about a 3000 mile round trip.

So, we leave tomorrow and will be making our way to Heindl for their Saturday Open House after which we will continue on through Indianapolis and on up through Wisconsin to make our way to St Paul area. I have some training to complete during the week and then we will be returning home by way of Iowa, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee onto Natchez Trace Parkway, then back home near Flovilla GA.

I hope I don't need you guys as in NEED help, but if you are out there in those general areas let us know. If nothing else, you may get a chance to ride along with us for a short ways. I will keep checking this post for comments and updating our general travel here.

Immediate plans
7/25 Thursday
Arriving around 8 to 9AM we will be in Cedartown GA for breakfast.
Following Hwy 27 through Chattanooga, passing through and probably stop around Bakewell, TN, Oneida TN and Daneville KY covering roughtly 430 miles the first day.

Friday 7/26
We plan to ride on up to Heindl passing through Lawrenceburg, IN. I think it is Hwy 127 for a while.

Saturday we will be at the Heindl Open house until roughly 2PM before we head out to Bloomington, IL covering about 260 miles Saturday afternoon.

Sunday, we will leaving Bloomington going through Rochelle, IL, Portage, WI to reach Menomonie, WI that evening. We won't ride into St. Paul until Monday AM.

Rigs are packed, we are packed and already working from the 4 totes we carry instead of luggage. We will sleep at home tonight as if in a hotel so we can just pack up in the morning and go!

Big trip, looking forward to it. Requesting travel prayers all around and Ivan's blessing on the rigs. :D

We're in the Minneapolis / St Paul area, if you need something once you hit Wisconsin let us know. We don't have a trailer, but if you need a ride for some reason, etc. we can come out.

I will send you my phone number in a PM.

Also, what are your plans once you hit St. Paul? If needed, there is a Ural dealership southwest of St. Paul in Lakeville, which is also near us.

Safe travels, I'd like to talk with you during or after your trip about your experience.

If you need a good breakfast in Rochelle stop by Grubsteakers at the corner of 251 & 64 (North of town). Are you taking interstates or 2-laners?

I will check that out and it'll be long about breakfast too.

We are looking at Interstates for the last leg. I've driven them before and I don't recall much in the way of congestion and confusing interchanges through there. Just stay in our lane and find a truck or RV to follow is what we usually do.

The Big Boy #4014 steam locmotive is going to be in downtown St.Paul at Union Station this week. All 1.2 million pounds of it, largest in the world. Check it out if you have time, originally built in 1941 it was just rebuilt after sitting for 60 years in an amusement park.

Hope to see you at Heindl Saturday, I'm aiming to get there about noon. Weather looks to be good for the open house.

So it sounds like you will not be swinging through the Black Hills?

Nope, the training was pushed out so instead of rushing up we have time to visit Heindl, but we have to get back once done in St Paul.

We did make it to Heindl today and looking forward to tomorrow.

The Heindl Open House was fantastic, even won a TShirt and got to meet many names on here and some not. But, at about 2:30 we had to head out for a 5 hour trip that turned into a 8 hour trip with the last 20 miles of the 280 mile run in the dark and rain. We were exhausted but the rigs were just fine.

We left out this morning at 6:30 heading north to Grubsteakers near Rochelle, IL for breakfast.

Looking forward to about another 270 miles before calling it a day near Eau Claire, WI for the night. After that, about am hour and a half ride into Shoreview, MN in the morning.

Been a great trip.

We arrived this morning at our Shoreview destination. Had a great ride in from Menomonie WI after a stormy night. Been busy, will be busy the next several days but having a great time.

More to come!

Pretty busy the past few days doing training. But we should wrap up Thursday and be on our way Friday. Planning to head toward Hannibal, MO on Friday.

Finished our training up a bit early, so we left out this morning. We are currently taking a break just north of Cedar Rapids IA. Probably only going another 80 or so miles today before overnighting somewhere near Iowa City, maybe further pending on how we feel.

Been a great trip so far and we got to see Iowa's largest frying pan in Brandon IA.

EDIT: actually, Iowa City is not as far as I thought, so we'll be overnighting further south somewhere.

If you are cutting across central Illinois check out the Psycho Silo Saloon near Sheffield -

Weekends typically have a live band of some sort and a good collection of bikes and old cars in the lot.
