Ural Motorcycles, Miami, and Cuban-Americans

Post by DrFaulken » Mon Apr 22, 2019 11:01 pm

We all know about the Ural Delay Factor, but I wasn't prepared for the emotions we encountered in Miami.

Unlike almost every other place I've been, many of the people we talked to knew what a Ural was. They either had a Ural themselves, or knew someone who did.

Everyone -- every last person -- we talked to from Cuba or of Cuban descent had smiled at the memory of having a Ural around, but was also sad about who and what they had to leave behind.

This video is a compilation from our bigger trip to Miami. It's short (around 2:30), and I hope you'll give it a watch.

Thank you! Just a short little piece about something that's been on my mind since our 4 days riding there in February. Thank you for the use of your photos!

Pretty cool video and observations.
I've had both positive and negative responses from Russian and Ukrainians who have transplanted here depending on their experiences in the old country. Sometimes just the sound of a Ural motor grabs attention.

I'm not much a fan of shields, if you need one go get in your car.
But that little mini one you have mounted is interesting. What is is?

Thanks for watching! I hope that if someone has a negative connotation to the Ural I'll get a (polite) explanation. I also wonder if more retro models and/or models with Soviet imagery evoke a different reaction than my (to my eyes) modernized Ural.

It's a GIVI screen. Not sure of the model ; this was one of Eagle Rider's rental bikes as configured by Ural of Miami.

Unfortunately it was totaled shortly after we filmed our episodes there :(

If you're interested in more info I could reach out to Ural of Miami and ask.

These sure do have a strong effect on anyone in the path! I recently went from Russia to the Aegean Sea on mine, where I went to check which one of these houses in Greece I wanted to buy for the holidays, and as much as they're a normal occurence in rural Russia, they provoked feelings of distrust and nostalgia, in equal proportions, all the way through Ukraine, Romania and Bulgaria.
