Ural Gear-up is 1st place finisher in 2019 Tour of Honor (Oregon Section)

Post by davek » Sat Apr 06, 2019 5:15 pm

This is a summary report. Full ride report later.

Before the 2019 Tour of Honor memorial sites were released this year, I decided that I was going to try like heck to get a trophy finish. I got the bike prepped, did as much ride preparation as possible and waited for the release of the site list at 1 second after midnight Easter time on April 1st.

Living in the extreme SW part of the state I waited to see what hand I would be dealt. If the sites were far away then I would be riding hours before even really starting. Ideally, if there is a clear "optimal" route showing after you circle the cities on a map, you want to be near one end of that route. This year the planets aligned: there was a memorial site in my town AND my town was at one end of what I figured was the optimum route to hit all of the sites and finish.

There were downsides that I faced. I had determined to leave as soon as possible after site release. Set up GPS waypoints, enter coordinates, etc. and then hit the road. Of course this means you start late at the end of a day and you are going to be tired. The weather forecast was rain and more rain. Wrestling a Ural around Oregon was also going to add to the challenge of trying to claim a trophy. But I was going, come hell or high water (the last being a distinct possibility).

Here is where we fast forward to the end of the summary report. I left Brookings just before midnight Sunday night and finished up in Baker City, in far NE Oregon about 3pm Tuesday. The distance on the route was 875 miles, probably half of which involved rain. I checked into a motel, got out the laptop and made my photo submissions. Each stop had to be properly documented and if going for a trophy, all submissions had to be sent within a five minute window. Now all I could do was wait.

The following afternoon, on my return trip I stopped and saw a new text message from my wife. She informed me that I had been awarded a first place finish. Total door-to-door miles for this adventure were 1500.

Thanks. My wife wasn't exactly crazy about me leaving at midnight in the rain and risking a meeting with Bambi. I told her no more "crazy" rides after this.

Sooooo... I may try again next year for one of the trophies, but will have to tone it down and see what happens.
