Wow! That looks like someone spread 30 cm of sticky mud on top of a grass trail in the woods. Is that a tree you're stuck on in the photo?
No - it's not my car in the photo. But the road has become exactly like in this photo. Real jeeps (UAZ, JEEP, Wrangler and the like) of course somehow passed. But people came there on crossovers. Toyota, Honda and the like. They were towed there, all the bumpers, license plates were torn off, all the cars were scratched and the wheels bent. I decided not to participate in this. It's one thing to drive there in a specially prepared car for this. And it's quite another thing to drive there in your everyday and at the same time fan car.

I like Bukhankas, but I don't think they are practical as your only car. I'm leaning towards a Daewoo Matiz as the main car, and a LuAZ-969M as the village vehicle. My granddaughter Varushka overheard my discussion with my daughter about cars and asked what a LuAZ was. I said it's the funny little dark green car down the block. Her immediate reaction was, "Buy it deda, buy it!" Her friend Masha's deda owns it, and he takes his grandkids mushroom and berry hunting in the forest, and to some very hard to reach fishing spots. The LuAZ is definitely not practical as your only car, but it can go places where a Ural would fear to tread. And besides, I love the sound of that little V4 engine, and its very distant relationship to the Ural Belka.

LUAZ yes - there is such a car. It was considered jeep for the poor. The most affordable SUV in the USSR. If you keep a good eye on him, he will drive. But it's small, slow, and not very reliable. The level of cross is just below the NIVA. However, this is also a fan car and it has its own fans. If you have an interest in such a technique, I advise you to pay attention to the LUAZ-967М TPK. Amphibian based on LUAZ. He swims well. And very similar in appearance. The steering wheel is located in the center.

Here, in the topic about brake pads in the Urals, we talked about salt, which is sprinkled on winter roads. The authorities believe that this contributes to the melting of ice, improved grip and increased traffic safety. This is probably true, BUT at what cost is all this achieved. In this video, I'm driving on my Loaf from Moscow along the M10 highway at a speed of 80-110km/h. In winter in February. The temperature was about -5 degrees Celsius. You can see what's going on on the road. That's horrible. Even at a temperature of -10 degrees Celsius, there is mud, water and slush on the road. Spray is flying from trucks in all directions. The windshield is all clogged with dirt and it's very hard to see through it. This is definitely not what every traveler dreams of. A fresh crisp snowball and cleanliness are quite another matter. Even if it's slippery and you have to drive slowly.

Comparison of the acceleration dynamics of the Urals and light BMW.

Ural IMZ 8.103-10 (1990) 270kg, О2, 650cc, 32-36hp at 5600rpm, 0-100 km/h in 13 seconds (New Ural 750cc in ~10.5 seconds).

BMW G310GS (2020) 175kg, 1DOHC, 313c c, 34hp at 9250rpm, 0-100km/h in 6.5 seconds.

January 7, 2024. The millennial city of Torzhok and the surrounding forest. The temperature is -30 degrees Celsius. Dedan-10 Winter Motorcycle Festival:

It was terribly cold, but very fun.

Grisha, thanks for the video. Brrrr too cold to ride. How your Ural behaved? Did it ran like a water cooled bike.

The rest is just history... 4 previous Urals with telescopic front ends, BMW airheads, bigger Hondas, bigger sidecars...

The engine started normally and worked normally. But there was not enough cross-country ability with 1WD. Some sections of the track in the forest, we dragged my motorcycle on our hands. But we warmed up ourselves. Cross-country tires work well in mud in summer:

But they are rather weakly hooked in winter on snow and ice.

This time, due to the very severe cold, there were relatively few people. Only the most persistent. In the past, when the temperature was at least -10 degrees Celsius, thousands of bikers gathered. There were more of them than in the summer at the opening of the motorcycle season. There was even one guy from the USA on his Gear-Up.
It's a very interesting experience. Winter off-road where even a tractor will not pass.
