2023 Spur Rally.

We rode mostly gravel county back roads Thursday afternoon. Up to the Sugar shack then county roads to Rochford SD, back down through Mysic mining town past where the massive dredge worked in the early 1900’s. The gold is 25 feet down and difficult to extract a lot is still down there. Yesterday we tried to locate a trail we rode a few years back. One small incident I powered out with my 2011 and after rolling backwards 3 times I laid the back over on me. Only thing hurt was the left turn signal on the rear. Had on my coat, helmet and some very heavy Fox Creek, chaps. Today we are going to run needles and Iron Mnt Road before Manscout and his bride return to Gillette, John and Jo and Marley are staying one mor night as I am before I head home tomorrow to Gillette. We had a great dinner last night at the Alpine Inn. Made it back before the rain. Tremendous lighting and thunder show last night and a downpour.

Today we rode the Needles Hwy, then Iron Mnt Road, and finally the wildlife Loop. Returning to camp got Jared and Katie loaded up and the said their goodbyes and headed back to Gillette. Heavy rains and hail again tonight. Plan is breakfast at the Hill City Cafe weather permitting. Then we will part company. SPUR 2023 is a wrap.

One great note was good to see one of our earlier Spur organizers and riders Lars Paulson at the Custer Crazy Horse Campground. He is thinking about getting another Ural. Cathedral Spires in the background on Needles Highway.

It was great weather, good company, and beautiful scenery as always. We took frequent stops and enjoyed our time together. We largely avoided any rain during the day, which is always welcome.

We started out Friday with a bit of a gremlin; My bike was only firing on one cylinder again. I had already checked everything but the spark plug. I went ahead and swapped in a new one, and that did the trick.
Later that day, Kenny tried to take a nap with his bike on him. Thankfully, we were able to come to the rescue and no crazy damage was done.
I ran into some issues on the road. My bike was wondering all over the road, and I was having trouble keeping it straight. I thought it might have just been me, but John told me it was terrifying watching that from behind. He said he had the same issue with his until he changed out the "grease int he head bearings. He said it was like w@* and not grease. The temporary trick is to to stop every 15 miles and turn the bars fully a few times. That seemed to do it for the rest of our trip, and I will address that soon.
Overall, it was great to be back on a newer machine with my favorite person beside me. The fuel injection didn't make the bike feel more powerful, but it did seem to have more in reserve. Where my 2011 would have been WOT, I had more throttle to give it if needed.

Wow! Looks like you guys had a great time. If you do it again next year I'm going to make it a point to get there. Glad you all had fun and avoided most of the rain.
