what kind of problems would I have if I bought a 2002 Ural??

I already know what I'm looking at but what can I expect.
This would be my first hack .

I would say, plan to add at least 30 minutes to each trip to compensate for all the attention you get and questions asked. :lol:

There are so many variables, mostly having to do with 'dumb luck' or mechanical misfortune that it is hard to say. Mileage and how the previous owner treated the beast has a great deal of impact too.

Unless it has already been changed out, I'd suggest changing out the battery for a new one.

Then take off the 35amp RPOC grenade alternator and replace it with a new -yes it's pricey - Denso system. Yours might be fine, but CMSI bikes have had their fair share of alternator-induced mechanical disasters that will cost you way more than the entry fee for the Denso. And even it will be well served by Krytoxing new bearings in the adapter (search this site for info on this)

Changing out all the fluids and oil filter right away gives you a nice baseline for future maintenance. Add some Sea-Foam or the like to the first few tanks of fuel.

Like Randy said, maintenance from the previous owner is key, as is mileage.

Is the mileage low because the owner didn't ride much or because it was "down" more than "up" ?

ANY vehicle that lays dormant for an extended period will have problems if certian precautions were not taken. Has the rig been stored inside since 2002 in a warm, comfy garage or left outside to the elements ?

High mileage on a Ural is actually a good thing. It means the odds of the owner finding/eliminating all the gremlins are higher.

Anything made of rubber should have been replaced at this point. Tires, fuel lines, etc. should be free of cracks/splits.

Pull the plugs on the tranny, FD and engine, look at the oil. If it's milky, be suspect. If it looks brand new, be even MORE suspect. If it's slightly dirty, that means the bike has been ridden and chances are the gaskets are keeping out water.

Like Randy said, a new alternator will give you piece of mind. Randy knows of what he speaks about the RPOC alternators munching on his engine(s) !!

If you can, find out the owners name, chances are one of us here will know him ! :)

I bought a 2002 Patrol last year and agree with the above replys. This bike was sitting in a field next to the guys house and was not running. It was dirty and the tires were weather checked, but the speedo showed only 7k km. I bought it and trailered it home. After inspecting the ignition system I discovered the famous 2 piece, pressed together rotor/spark interruptor had spun. However, with a new billit unit in place the motor started right up. I changed all the fluids and oil filter, adjusted the valves removed and cleaned the carb jets and float bowl. I then replaced or (in some instances) had repaired/replaced some components that were questionable or obviously damaged.
The 2002 Urals were the first 750cc production units. Later models had changes to the heads and barrels. Consequently, heads and their related components may be difficult to come by.[/img]
Tooling around doing errands is a hoot. The front drum brake requires you to really pay attention and think ahead as stopping distance may not be as predictable as with newer disc brakes.
In other words, if it looks like a good deal, get it , have fun.

There's nuthin crazy different about an '02 model versus another model year...

The '02 was a CMSI era early 750 and NOT an IMWA or current version of the engine. SOME but not all parts in this engine are not interchangeable with current version parts especially in the top end so ya just have to be careful what ya order , etc....

Most of the parts outside the engine are pretty much the same as other model years. NO rig except a new one will have ALL the same parts as a new version unless it has been "upgraded" or modified which MOST rigs get along the way at some point.

Russian biker has-been....
Rode around the block a couple times
and got rid of the goofy thing...

Well--I did it. Sitting in my driveway is a prestine black 2002 Ural Tourist.

3800km with everything that came with it from original. The price was very reasonable so the learning fun begins!

45 years of solo.. 0 years of hack!
