Newb From Wanaka New Zealand

Post by Two Moto Kiwis » Thu Nov 21, 2019 4:21 pm

Heya all

We are Andi & Ellen Delis from New Zealand

We are in the throws of looking at a travel bike and sidecars interest us, the appeal of reverse and 2wd is high.

Specifically, the Gear up would be the most likely candidate, I will do a heap of reading etc before I going and asking already covered questions but likely I will still ask something simple from not knowing.

Look forward to catching up with some questions that will help with our choice of weapon.

A brief history, have ridden sidecars here and there throughout my moto riding life, I have been owned by 45 motos over 40 years and have done some travelling as well.

Just finishing a trip now in Bulgaria, on a WR250 tho not a 3 legged monster :D

Welcome: NZ is one country that I always wanted to visit. Grew up on the tales of Polynesia, Captain Cook and that age of (well Western discovery!)

Looks like you truly would be a GU candidate. One aspect is by its nature, the GU is direct drive and that is more of an assist in getting out or through stuff than the usual no locking 4 x 4 .

Welcome Andi,
I have been to the South Island and I loved it. Great Ural riding country.
My only concern with your plan is, will New Zealand allow sidecars on the right hand? You can't have 2 WD on a lefty.
I may not be good, but I'm slow.

Heya guys

Cheers for the welcoming.

Sorry I wasn't clear, we will be using it starting in East Russia, then Eastern Europe, Balkans, Stans etc so yes defo for right hand chair with 2WD, yes in Kiwiland we ride on the left hand side so only 1WD available there.

Yeah plenty of great riding in NZ and where I live in Central Otago is very nice for riding the tops.

Unless the law has been recently changed in NZ, then you are misinformed about 2WD motorcycles. Unlike Australia and the UK, NZ does not have a prohibition against RH sidecars. http://www.ural.nz

Looks like they actually sell RH drive with 2WD there.

Difference between being allowed to drive and not selling them.

As he starts in Russia with a RH and GU, good to go.

While LH drive cars are not sold commercially in the US of course , you can bring them in and drive them fully legal. Its a bit odd but easily adjusted to though you need a passenger to pass!
