Should I replace the pinion gear with only light damage or should I replace it because I'm already in there?Tomcatfixer wrote: ↑Sat Mar 09, 2019 7:12 amNot the worst thing you could find.
Glad it was only a missing chunk of ring gear tooth and a pinion chip. I'm sure you learned a lot diving-in on this project, which can sometimes be more valuable than the work itself.
10-4 ThanksTomcatfixer wrote: ↑Sat Mar 09, 2019 11:07 pmThat chip is right where the ring gear teeth mesh. I wouldn't think it would be good for proper wear.
I'd replace it because of the damage.
+1Albuquralque wrote: ↑Sun Mar 10, 2019 3:49 pmMost importantly.......pinion and ring gear come as a set, break in as a set, and wear as a set.
They should be replaced as a set!

Most reputable ural dealerships will only sell you the gear set and recommended to change both ring and pinion.
Why not go with new Italian gears?

They did come as a set. Pinion gear for 2wd and ring gear with it.
These "Italian gears" are like big foot, everyone's heard about them but nobody's seen them.
I went with the standard old gears....I got the 2wd set because it was in stock and I was told wouldn't make a difference. I'm going with that.
Thanks for the advice, I'll change both. Hopefully this set will get me to Crap and back and then on to TAT.
Thanks all I appreciate it very much.
I'll post more pics and update as soon as weather breaks and my drive is dry so I can work.

I kept dropping those damn needle bearings and I couldnt get the bearing rollers off the gear, the nut that goes right lose, left tight gave me a very hard time, the seal inside ripped and wouldn't come out. I'm trying to do this all in my driveway........
Anyway, I'm here to turn in my greasy wrench card. I'm throwing my hands up in the air. I'm calling in an expert.
Yea, I said it, I'm boxing it all up and sending it to Mr. Crawford to be put back together correctly, someone I trust to fix it right. If I attempt it any further I feel I would do more bad than good. I've already thrown all the time and resources I have and I failed.![]()
I'll let you all know when it comes back and is in.
Many thanks for the help....I appreciate it.
