Another new Brit.

Post by Aircondoc » Thu Mar 01, 2018 3:47 pm

Hi all, I’ve recently bought myself a 1999 650 Red Star solo. Rode it home 150 miles too!
Already replaced the carbs for “Koso” flat slide ones, and ditched the air filter for K&N types, fitted a copper plate where the filter was as I’m aiming for a retro look. New solo seat went on today and I have plans regarding the lights and indicators.
Still not running perfectly but I have a pal with vacuum gauges who is going to help set up the new carbs. Pics taken today in my garage whilst storm Emma rages outside.
Looking forward to being on the forum and enjoying returning to biking after a six year hiatus.

Welcome! I purchased a '99 last year and am currently on the "upswing" of it's "reinvigoration". I've got quite a detailed thread about the overhaul here: http://www.sovietsteeds.com/forums/view ... 10&t=47611

When you get an opportunity, please update your signature line with the year and model of your Ural, plus your general location. This gives readers of your posts context for your questions and comments.

Ebay specials £5.99 each, but they have a 45˚ angled intake which takes them away from your legs. I really don't like the stock item full of fishing line.

Cheers.
I see that it has no specific mounts as such. Is yours utilising the Ural mounts or have you fabricated things to suit?

Front mount was eBay. It came with a pair of springs for the back but I felt they would add too much height (I’m not very tall!). I had to raise it slightly by using a piece of ally conduit cut and filed to fit (pic2). I had a couple of small brackets in my “come in handy” box which when straightened and re-bent fitted the rear perfectly (pic 1). The frame under the front of the seat was a bit ugly so I cut some sheet stainless to fill the gaps secured with self tappers (pic 3, stainless was sourced from an old fridge door - it’s thin and easy to cut and shape) Sprayed brackets and fastenings with black enamel before fitting. Whole thing cost about £60 (roughly $80) if you factor in fastenings etc.
