Common bolts/nuts to tighten?

Post by Mikey » Sat Feb 24, 2018 7:33 pm

Hi Gang

Can anyone provide a list of common bolts to loosen? I had loose handlebar bolts, but that's it so far. I'm only a quarter through tightening bolts. I can't continue much longer. If someone could post pics that would be ideal and appreciated.

Not sure there are common bolts that go loose, at least on my bikes.

The only thing I would check on a regular basis were the tail light lenses. Washboard roads tended to work those loose on my old Patrol. New Gear Up will get LED's and locktite at some point.

Every 10,000kms or so, do a quick check around the supports, shocks, disk brakes etc. I lost two zero fittings (who knew they could/would come lose), so when folks say check for tightness, they mean it.

The 14 Ural hasn't been a problem but the 06 liked to loosen the oil pan bolts. I did loose the bottom front side car mount bolt on the 14 though. It's under the cylinder head so I forgot it. All In all, you should go over every bolt once in awhile. I lost several fasteners by skipping over them once too often. I try to test every fastener at least every 10,000 km.
I may not be good, but I'm slow.

My common practice is to check yer nuts n bolts at every service. What I do is a take an open end wrench out of the tool kit and go over the bolts that fit it. Then move onto the next size. Remember! Snug is good enough. Never like the mighty Hercules. The common nuts for me that always seem to need a little snug are the engine mount bolts. It's always good to get in the habit of going over at every service. It only takes a small amount of time.

What is a zero fitting?
I'll bet his 'phone autocorrected grease 'zerk' to 'zero'.
"Zerk fitting" is probably what he meant.

The Engine mount hardware, especially at the foot pegs is something one should check a couple times a year.

Mikey, newer Urals with the nylok nuts are pretty good, my 2016Gu hasent had a loose one in 4000k i just get a comfortable mechanic seat a few wrenches a cold one and start at the front and feel all my nuts. not sure about this concern on the newer bikes i have had many motorcycles sense 1957 and never did a regular nut/bolt tightening and don't remember any serious problems, Urals of the past i think caused this phenomenon. anyway not criticizing its still a good thing to do for safety and to avoid a breakdown.

Final Drive bolts (at the swing arm). Once a week. Loose bolts kill final drives.
