I now have 6200 miles. Don't understand why these things have a bad rap. Mine has never failed to start. Rides great and goes where I want it to go.

solo1966, i agree my 2016 GU is about the same not one thing has gone bad. Granted we will probably get the usual return posts Oh! well. think my comments/thinking needs some explaining tho. Never saying that there isn't a high degree of chance that something will go wrong as with any low budget cottage industry piece of machinery it can and very well might happen , but these Ural machines have got stronger in many of their weakest areas. We all must by now know those places as we see posts all the time on the failures. Just hope that with my over done maintenance and attention to areas that have had issues like nuts coming off, proper alignments, and probably the biggest driving the Ural within its intended limits. Call me crazy or a new-bee fool, but i love the Ural and hope she continues to be a good machine. :foilhead:

Wouldn't be a very interesting forum, without the mechanical drama. Hopefully not for me, but you never know! I have great faith in the new improved Ural! I have noticed less and less postings on the newer Urals as to catastrophic failures. :koolaid: :pot:

Just FYI, here's mine (in chronological order)

1. final drive leak (cured by using thicker oil)

2. front tube went flat, badly installed rim tapes, 2 of them (!) (replaced)

3. rear brake switch stuck on or won't make contact (needs constant monitoring / freq. switch cleaner / WD40)

4. [latest] gearbox speedo drve gears worn out, cuz not hardened (replaced)

Starting issues - mine doesn't like being cold started and then not ridden, i.e. just turned off after a few minutes. The next time, and it could be the next day, or 2 - 3 days later, very reluctant to start, "grinding" the battery to get it to go, alternately trying no throttle, bit of throttle. Conclusion: only start if actually going to ride away.

NB: I don't regard any of these as cataclysmic issues.

7200 miles now I love this thing. 7 degrees had a little trouble starting. Once started ran like a Swiss watch.

solo1966,i have a 2016 Gu just wonder how the U-joint went bad so early, you said you didn't grease it right ? the only fitting i had to learn to grease properly was the FD joint because you cant get a zerk on the fitting ,have to use the Lincoln grease fitting takes a little trial and error but will push grease out the seals as wanted.

I was so busy enjoying it I forgot to grease the thing. My dad told me how dumb I was and to remember that when you use equipment you grease it.

your dad is a wise man! i once had a boat trailer that the wheels went under water when launching, they had a screw to help keep water out, but also needed grease often.if your water crossing is any indication .

I tried starting mine by kick start first off and have never managed it. Run it a while and it will kick off every time. That is about the only complaint I have with the bike
