Practically every carbed kick start bike has there own specific drill that you eventually learn. Some require a slight crack of the throttle while kicking, some may need the throttle open 1/8-1/4? Procedure varies with state of tune, weather etc. If you flood the cylinders you'll need the throttle way open. If the bikes been sitting awhile, days and days and you have the vacuum petcock, be a good idea to switch the petcock to PRIme for a bit to insure there's fuel in the carb bowls. As mentioned previously don't count on the kicker as a back up plan for a dead battery. The battery still has to have a reasonable amount of charge to fire the ignition to get started. The kicker on a electric start bike with a coil/batt ignition is kinda pointless except for the cool looks factor. My guess is within a few years IMZ will drop the kicker altogether or offer it as an extra cost option.

Gobium has a video somewhere on how to kick start with a dead battery. It is very simple. Take a 9v battery, the hot goes to the yellow of the ECU and the cold to the body, this is enough power to kick start.

Just another thing to put in your tool box.

Another good reason to have a few of these around:

Wouldn't work on an FI bike though, unless you still had enough pressure in the fuel system :(

One of these mini boosters would work for backup. Comes in a little zippered case.

Super easy, make sure you have your bike sorted out and tuned. You should do that anyway, right? The way I do it is a bit old school. Mthe ural is very easy to kick start. Press down on the lever with your foot, If you dont feel pressure back up against just follow through. The next stroke you should feel pressure. Just put some weight on the foot and follow through. My old one would always start in three or 4 kicks. My new one always starts in one. Dont touch anything but the chokes and the keys when you kick start, unless the bike doesnt start in three kicks, then just give it a suirt of fuel.

I don't,someone put the sidecar on the wrong side & not much room in there.
I bought one of those cute little jump start battery kits just in case.

Those 'down under' bikes have an optional rope pull-starter.

This is sort of kicking over a dead thread, but I shot this video today and thought someone may benefit from it someday.

"Kicking over a dead thread" :D

As I didn't see it above I'll throw in my starting procedure for my
IMZ M61:

- Petcock open (I do this first to allow fuel to fill the carb bowls)
- Key in and pressed down (Red light comes on)
- Bring the advance/retard lever towards you (Completely retarded  )
- If shes cold then shut the enricher/choke at the lever on the left side of the air filter
- Prime the carbs (K302) by holding the float button for 5 seconds (Each side)
- Gently cycle the engine on the kickstart, just enough to draw in mixture (I normally do this twice)
- Get kickstarter to bite on the compression stroke and give a firm kick
- Normally starts first kick maybe second
- Once she fires immediately advance the ignition to full forward position
- She will run well on the choke without needing throttle input until she warms which is clearly audible (about 2 minutes of running) as the running becomes lumpy, once this happens open the choke/enricher lever and she will smooth out nicely

Notes:
- If she's warm/hot I just skip the enricher step
- Avoid retarding the ignition at your peril .... I've been lucky and only suffered sprains, but a good friend of mine broke his ankle kicking a bike without retarding the ignition.....ooouch

Any easy fix for kickstart lever no longer engaging? This is a recent problem, although the machine isn't getting as much useage as it had been. It will engage perhaps 1 out of 20 pushes on the lever. I have always at least kicked it through a couple of times, even if using the e-start.

The absolute correct method......With the machine warmed up....surrounded by Harley riders....Ignition switch on, BRB on, in neutral, set kick start to TDC....one kick!!!....pu$$ie$......off I go. If it don't start... go to start button...pu$$ie$...off I go!

Sounds like your kickstarter gear might be missing a few teeth.

Rivers statement on the possibility of dropping the kicker at some point brings my lack of knowledge in to play yet again. Is the dreaded hydrolock not an issue with efi engines? After meeting a dude who said it happened on his Enfield I live in terror of it.

It is not an issue with EFI engines. I suppose it's possible but highly unlikely.
Past afflictions include limey motocars and bikes, R60/2, R65ls, & a Citroen.

The suggestion to stand on a foot peg made all the difference in the world. At 5'8", kicking from the ground causes my foot to point upwards and roll off the kick start level. The extra height allows me to point my toes down and drive the kick start to the bottom.
