How do YOU kick start your Ural?

Post by wecoyote » Tue May 24, 2016 9:06 am

I wasn't sure this question is better served her as a Newbie or in the Watering hole. It really isn't an important questions as much as it is a curiosity. I know there are several posts about kick starting our steeds, however, I am curious how YOU do it. Do you face the bike, look away or straddle? Which foot do you use?

Once my engine is broken in, I am going to get in the habit of kick starting every once in a while. I haven't tried, but since my fuelie only has ~650km, I doubt I could kick start it even if I wanted to. I'm going to do this for two reasons. First, in the unlikely event that my battery is dead I will have practiced. Second, because it looks cool when people are watching. 8)

It can be kick started easily already. I have to face my rig to do it. Give it 2-4 pumps to get the injectors to squirt then give it the kick and it will usually fire up

I've been kick starting it for the last couple years. couple strokes with ignition off then usually fires 1st kick, standing on the ground, right foot, no throttle but right hand on it ready to give it gas once it starts.
Past afflictions include limey motocars and bikes, R60/2, R65ls, & a Citroen.

My Dnepr is kick start only. I face the rig, crack the throttle and kick it with my right foot.

It usually starts on the first kick.

One slow turn of the engine with the kickstarter with the ignition off (avoids Hydrolock).
Turn petcock to PRI, pull out carb enrichers/chokes, turn on ignition.
Kick, it starts.
Immediately turn off the enrichers/chokes, turn petcock to "ON", let it run for a couple minutes, take off and ride.

I'm still running the original vacuum petcock so if you've changed to a manual gravity one it would be going directly to "ON" from "OFF".
If it's real cold out it might take 2 or 3 kicks. Right now she is freshly tuned and starts on the first light push down on the kicker. I can barely call it a kick compared to kick-starting my '69 BMW which requires a lot of effort. That bike can and will start on the 1st or 2nd kick but can be a leg-ach'er. I push my leg down with my hand to help. Same exact location (sideways kicker) as the Ural.

I always start the Ural by kicking. And use the e-start later during the day sometimes when the engine has been warm. I like kickstarting.

I have some hardware in my legs & devised an EZ way to kick start my Urals (my latest one has a starter). I stand on the passenger peg with my right foot & operate the kick starter with my left. This is much easier for me, as it gets my bodyweight OVER the kicker & I can give it a faster boot.
Give this a try - very easy.

.......this......ignition off, one slow push to check for hydro-lock, cold temps outside mean chokes are out, key back on and she usually starts first kick, after about 10 seconds (unless it is really cold outside) the chokes go back in. :foilhead:

Sounds about right, but now I have an electric start - So I just push my kick starter through slowly by hand before starting. No climbing & foot peg stays folded (I'm older now).

I stand on the passenger footpeg with my right foot and kick with the left.

Turn gas on (I replaced the crap vacuum petcock with an on/off/reserve gravity fed model), pull out enricheners (chokes as some folks call them) on both carbs, turn on ignition and verify big red button is set to "run", give it one or two slow priming kicks until you feel the pistons get in place (takes practice), crack and hold throttle slightly, and then one swift kick and the beast usually fires to life.

YMMV... Each Ural has it's own starting sequence that works best.

I sit on the seat and kick it over with my left leg/foot. This is also the only way that our friends from the British Empire can start theirs, with the sidecar on the left side.
