I guess some people just like to experiment. I had to re-jet because when I got my Ural the previous owner had fitted a straight through exhaust but I was not convinced the jetting was right. In the end I got it smack on. :D

In the number of people that have posted here on this topic so far, the bikes they own has covered 3 variations on the electronic ignition and 5 variations on how the carbs were set up from the factory. The bikes change from year to year.

Thanks, Terry. Sounds like the best track would be to just "wait and see" if we like how it runs?

I picked my bike up and other than the heat blocks, I haven't done a thing to the carbs. Its been running without any problems at all. So I figure I'll wait till something happens before I start screwing around. If it aint broke, don't fix it!

That never happens when it's 15F out. Even after a one hour commute to work.
For me the stock jets were awful.

Bike delivered with 130/40 main and idle, a standard upgrade by Gene. Bike ran fine, dark plugs started first crank.

In an effort to improve mileage I went back to the factory (for a 2011 GU) 122 main and used a Gossie needle, air screw out 1.5 turns. Runs great. Minimal cold start noise, burble in the pipes on deceleration, plugs nice and clean, very slight base color. Now I use the enricheners on startup when temps are in the 40's for the initial start and then close them. Mileage change is more related to break in (i'm at 11,000+ km now) and my throttle hand. Running 58-63 on the the highway I get 26-27 mpg (corrected for odometer error). At 50-55 I get 31.7 pretty regular (both with winds below 10mph). :foilhead:

I put the 130 mains back in with the Gossies and found my mpg at fast speeds dropped to 24mpg, so I'm sticking with the 122's. No changes to air cleaner or filter (the 2011's have the Russian K&N type oiled filters).

Most importantly, Having fun all the time :moto:

Some carbs have coarse and some have fine threads.

I would like to point out that IMZ-Ural updated the OE needles to match the previous needles with 2 shims.

I have a 2004 Patrol that I have own and rode sine early 2004. I have considered re-jetting, but my performance is such that I couldn't imagine any gain, especially compared to what I read on the boards. I have the stock air cleaner and clean the filter when it needs it, I also pulled both cats before 500k, and the bike hase about 45k on it give or take since I've had the speedo replaced two times and there's mileage in between without the speedo operating.

Until you ride a rig that is set up well you can't imagine.

I had ridden Mr. Cob's Preaditor a couple of times before I got serious about getting rid of the OE aircleaner. The absolute top end really isn't that much different, but everything between idle and wot is significantly different.

I ran the OE aircleaner for 5 years, it works, but leaves lots of room for improvement.

Signature says it all. When I originally got it in January 2010 it would start in 20 degree temps without the enrichers. I was also getting around 18 mpg. Turns out the dealer put in much larger jets, evidently thinking I wouldn't understand how to start it in cold weather otherwise.

For a while I was running 130's and 127.5's but after a visit with Ski at Triquest last year while on a business trip, I went back to the stock jetting. He's done a lot of dyno work and my take away from that was unless you are doing very significant mods to airbox/exhaust, the standard jets work just fine, and that was up to about 5000 ft elevation if I remember correctly.

As stated earlier in this post, properly adjusted valves and balanced carbs go a long way towards a smooth running engine. I also believe that the Gossie needles do help the performance. I've been running mine for almost 12K with no wear issues whatsoever. Never changed the clips from the setting they arrived with and they are very tight on the needles. I was adding Sea Foam before I put them in and continue to add some every couple tankfuls. Using an additive was on of Gossie's recommendations regarding the wear issue but I was doing that anyway.
